    Re: Marvel: Agents of Shield

I have a general question regarding the S.H.I.E.L.D. acronym, independent of the show (and actually pertaining to the movies). Just didn't want to bump anything else to ask it, so I'll go ahead and ask it here.

Captain Marvel took place well before Iron Man in the timeline, yet in IM1 Agent Coulson tells Pepper that they were working on [a name] for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division." Then by the end of the film, he says: "Just call us S.H.I.E.L.D." as if they finally were okay with the name now that they figured out "Hey, it's an acronym" (like no one would have noticed that immediately, but whatever I'll go with it).

So was that just a throwaway joke line in IM1 that they decided to retcon/ignore for Captain Marvel? Actually, does the show ever blast back to timeline bits before IM1 when they're calling it S.H.I.E.L.D. as well?

Thanks for attending to my curiosity.

Season finale this Friday. 2 hour finale! On plus side, we know this isnt series finale (unlike s5 where the show ended and we found out around that same time that the show was continuing). Though series finale is next year. Cast almost done filming it already.

Not sure about connection, but I remember when they were talking about Skyes past, they said she was found by SHIELD agents. That would've been in the late 80s I believe. Not sure if people back then would've called it Shield or not though.

Yeah, that's kind of what I mean. Why were they calling it S.H.I.E.L.D. in the late 80s, and then in the 2000s Coulson was saying that they were working on a shorter name?

Maybe he meant they wanted a name that was shorter than Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement Logistics Division. Couldnt come up with one, so they just decided to go/stick with Shield.

You’re missing my point. He said that to Pepper in the 2000’s, yet they apparently were already saying S.H.I.E.L.D. in the 80’s (Coulson as well).

It goes from a good cheesy little catch in IM1 to a bizarre continuity goof in Captain Marvel.

2 hour season finale tonight! After that, it's another 9 or 10 month wait until the final season.

Plenty of time to re-watch the past seasons. I watched 1-2 before this season, so I'll do the rest before the final season.

What a crazy season finale! Have no idea where they're going with next season. Marvels Legends of Yesterday? Lol

I loved this season, solid plot, great character beats, no complaints with it all, and yet it only ranks 4th out of the six seasons for me. It's just a testament to how unbelievably great some of the other seasons were, IMO. For me it's: 5, 4, 3, 6, 2, 1.

Although I'm going to miss the show when it's gone, 7 seasons is remarkable for a show that didn't seem like it would last past season 1.

I never get why people hated s1 so much. I loved it. The hydra element, Bill Paxton as the bad guy and Ward turn were so great.

That was the key plot point that turned the show from okay to good and set the stage for the greatness that would come. That didn't happen until Episode 17 though, and even though they were setting the stage and building the world before then, many of the early episodes just didn't pop. You mentioned that you were doing a re-watch, don't you feel a palpable difference in beginning of season one and the beginning of season 2. Two just has so much more polish across the board, IMO.

2 overall was better, but 1 had great 2nd half. Ward turn was episode 17, but even before that we had some interesting stories. The episode where they took Coulson and tried to kill Mike was where the show first started changing.

Its like S4 though, 2nd half was great, but 1st not as much. While the Hydra arc was really only 6 episodes, everything the episodes prior were building to that.

I'd take those 6 episodes over the 10 from this season, or 10 in other arcs(not including the framework one in s4) we've seen in the past.

Ending was great. Too bad Fitz and Simmons are separated again. I was thinking they both would have been upgraded, but I guess they are just separated again.

Not sure I like the time battles they are setting up for the final season. Too many loopholes in those stories.

                            Been rewatching S4 lately.

Just as good as I remembered it. Even better at times since its first time watching it again so I know what to look for.

The LMD arc is probably the best one in the shows history.

I wonder if the final season might happen earlier since they'll badly need shows to start filling slots once the current shows start wrapping up, or don't have episodes to air since filming has stopped. I'm sure AoS has wrapped up the series filming already.
