CBS sports radio is so bad I often turn it off rather than listen to the idiots they have hosting. I do like Doug Gottleib. I miss Cowherd from ESPN.

CBS sports radio is terrible, especially Jim Rome
My local sports talk radio switched from ESPN to CBS. While I find CBS generally worse, Jim Rome is especially loathesome. He repeats himself numerous times, seems more concerned with smack talk than sports, and his voice is just plain irritating. Another ridiculous host they have is the guy who sounds like Krusty the Clown. I think his last name is Farrell or something. Listening to him makes my throat hurt.

Re: CBS sports radio is terrible, especially Jim Rome
It's all tripe after a while. But I never like Rome. I could never be as cool as him. It's just not possible. Cow-herd never met an opinion of his he didn't like.
But how does listening to someone make your throat hurt? Ears bleed, yes. But throat hurt? -
Re: CBS sports radio is terrible, especially Jim Rome
People don't like Cowherd and I love his show on ESPN.
People love Rome (not on OS) and I hate his show on CBS.
I think it's difficult to narrow it down to specific sports outlets, really. ESPN has their moments too where they will beat a specific news story or topic into the ground. Over the entire span of the day, they will have 5 or so shows on their main network that all want to cover the same topic.
I listen to a lot of sports radio at work. It all gets old after a while except one radio show here in the Birmingham/Hoover area.
This time of year is especially brutal. All you will have here soon is Baseball and World Cup Soccer to focus on, really. NHL, NFL, NCAAB, NCAAF, and the NBA are all done for a while.
I just sort of "check out" from the sports world around this time. It gives me more time to complete or something.
What likely happened is your local station's ESPN contract ran up. They will probably be looking to migrate to another local frequency if that specific station had a lot of success. Same thing happened in Birmingham. ESPN was with WJOX 94.5 FM (same network at The Roundtable and Paul Finebaum) and then their contract ran up and they resigned with 97.3 the zone. They only do ESPN radio "updates" and then they pick up Hill and Schlahoweveryouspell his name and Freddie Coleman at night. There's a new station that just plays ESPN radio all day, though.Last edited by AUChase; 06-24-2013, 11:19 AM.Comment

Re: CBS sports radio is terrible, especially Jim Rome
I've only heard the overnight stuff and a smattering of the weekend mornings of CBS radio since the station here decided to stop their original late night programming. It's pretty bad but ones up ESPN in that it's live programming overnight rather than canned highlights/interviews. I find the callers are generally not of a high caliber and the hosts are very meh. Actually Damon Amendolara isn't too bad but man does the guy talk too much. In fact, most of the hosts i've heard have the bad habit of overtalking.
A couple ESPN alumms have shows though in John Kincade who's generally pretty good and Amy Lawrence who is a mixed bag IMO. One drawback i've found with CBS sports radio is that the slant is so heavily on the NBA. Every caller seemingly wants to talk basketball to the exclusion of other sports which is just insane.
I do want to check out the mid morning weekday host (maybe i'll stream it one day) and listen to John Feinstein. He's a very good sports writer what with his long form books on various sports. You'd think that'd make for bad radio but the other all sports station in Toronto employs a sports writer on their drive time show and he's pretty damn good, not as good as Bob McCown but much better than James Cybulski was. So maybe Feinstein's show is a smart well rounded listen. (BTW the other sports station in Toronto TSN Radio DOES use ESPN. I just wish the signal was stronger I can hardly pick it up)
Anyways, I'm gonna be intrigued to see what CBS Sports Radio does now in the lull between end of basketball and the start of football because so far i've barely heard any baseball being spoken of.
Oh and i've heard that Ferrall guy a few times. I don't know how the hell a guy with that kind of voice has a nationally syndicated radio show. He makes Alex Jones sound like James Earl Jones.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: CBS sports radio is terrible, especially Jim Rome
Oh man, I forgot about Fox Sports Radio. The FAN here in Toronto used them for overnight programming for about 3 months. FSR didn't really have a live overnight presence but would air a "best of the day" package.....It was VERY annoying, uncouth and at times offensive. The station got a TON of negative feedback and they wisely dropped FSR.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: CBS sports radio is terrible, especially Jim Rome
I actually like Jim Rome. I used to really not like him. Then I listened for a few weeks, got caught up on some of the inside jokes and the callers and I've really enjoyed it ever since. That's probably been over 10 years ago. I don't listen to it everyday, I probably listen for 30 minutes a couple times a week, but I like his show.
I don't like Ferral, or Ferrel or whatever his name is. Just not a fan.PSN: Koolie_G

Re: CBS sports radio is terrible, especially Jim Rome
I hated the switch where I am. I assumed it was because football season was over.
The only guy I like, who I swore I would hate but just can't stop listening to him, is that guy with that incredibly scratchy voice. He's hilarious and pretty opinionated in ways that I can agree with. Just don't know his name.
EDIT: Ah, Koolie said his name above me. Ferrel or whatever. I couldn't listen to him on a daily basis, but I just can't change the station when he's on. I really want to dislike him, and I actually probably do... but I love listening to him for whatever ridiculous reason. You can't deny his dry humor helping make his show. Re: CBS sports radio is terrible, especially Jim Rome
I like Rome's show to be honest, but I don't listen often.
I miss when Tony Kornheiser had his show on ESPN Radio back in the day. Sporting News Radio was good around that time as well.
Ben Maller is decent overnights on Fox Sports radio but the rest of their format is awful anymore. JT The Brick is OK in small doses but can get annoying.
I tend to stick to podcasts anymore for sports type radio.GT: Herkyalert

Re: CBS sports radio is terrible, especially Jim Rome
Fortunately, we actually have another station here in D/FW that is somewhat live at that time and I'll either listen to that or I'll jack in my iPhone and listen to the MLB At Bat audio instead if there's a late game that catches my interest.

My local channel did the same thing back on January 1. Used to listen to their channel every day, haven't listened for a second since then. I just listen to SVP & Russillo on demand via the ESPN Radio app on my phone now.Member: OS Uni Snob Association | Twitter: @MyNameIsJesseG | #WT4M | #WatchTheWorldBurn
