I didn't know Vince Russo wrote for How I Met Your Mother..
Spoilerseriously, though. I just hate the idea of making people invest the past couple of years into Barney & Robin being married, only to say "F that!"
Also, to spend a whole season making people fall in love with the mother character, only to pull it away.
SpoilerThe way I feel is that we all knew this wasn't the story about how Ted met the mother. There were seasons it was more about Barney's character arc, there were seasons where it was about the desperation of Ted losing Robin again, etc. If the show was about the mother, she should have been included from the get go.
For me, this show is and always has been about the journey. It's not necessarily a subversion for them to say the story is about meeting the mother, because I think the writers would like to assume people were watching the show for more than just that one moment. Along this journey, Ted met the love of his life, as so often happens in people's lives.
I understand that it would neat and tidy for things to end in a perfect world where someone falls in love with one woman and they both live happily ever after. But people die (Mother), people get divorced (Barney/Robin), and people go through hard times (Ted). I appreciate the show for having the guts to call it like they see it. For me, personally, I am sick of the perfect ending.Writer for Operation Sports

One thing I said earlier in spoilers (it's not a spoiler), is that I do love a show for creating discussion. At the very least, like it or not, that's what this is going to do.Writer for Operation Sports

I understand this reservation of the finale, definitely.

It just rubs me the wrong way even though I think it's believable.NFL: Bills

Re: How I Met Your Mother: Season 9 (The Final Season)
The ending didn't match Ted's character that they setup though.
He doesn't marry the mother for 7 years after getting engaged. Are you kidding, this is Ted and his marriage book, castle, etc. No way he waits 7 years.
He searches his whole life to find the woman he loves and then after she dies, he goes back to Robin.
Basically what they have done is said Robin was truly the love of his life and the mother was just another woman he fell in love with. Robin always had his love and everyone else was just second best. Just Ted trying to cover up his hurt. That doesn't really fit Ted. I would have rather them had Ted breakup Robin and Barney then this.Comment

Re: How I Met Your Mother: Season 9 (The Final Season)
That ending.....
SpoilerSeriously!?!? Yes, good news is that everything actually did connect, and it was a unique thing how the story of the show wasn't the real message all along. They did know the ending from the start and looking back on all the things that have happened during the show, it does all make sense.
However........ARE YOU SERIOUS! Marshall/Lily do get their happily ever after ending, but Robin/Barney got divorced,Robin leaves everyone, Barney just goes back to the same old life he had before, then gets some random women pregnant, becomes a dad and that's it for him....and Ted searches for so long for the perfect women, finds her, gets engaged, has 2 kids, and then she dies?!? And then tells his kids a story of how he met her, and then it just ends with "ya..Ted met her,we now know the mother has been dead for years, and then Ted just goes back to Robin and that's the show".
I was hoping so badly that the women Barney got pregnant happened to be Robin(like some crazy twist where she somehow manages to have kids),or at least like a surrogate for him/Robin. Instead, she's someone we'll never know who it was. I guess that makes sense based on his life and how his life started out and stuff(never knowing who one of his parents was and everything)

Robin is the love of his life. They made that abundantly clear over the course of the show, I thought.Writer for Operation Sports

Re: How I Met Your Mother: Season 9 (The Final Season)
Love the series, terrible ending IMO.
Those last scenes not only destroyed a 9 year story but were just painful to watch.
To keep from being forever bitter I think I'm just going to pretend the series ended with Ted meeting his girl at the train station. So disappointed.Good job! Good effort!Comment

Re: How I Met Your Mother: Season 9 (The Final Season)
I guess the whole stuff about
Spoiler
Tracy was true then. Remember several seasons ago when Ted met a stripper and she said her name was Tracy. Then Ted is like "and that's how I met your mother" and was joking(but kids really bought it), guess we know why, and that theory was true.
Ted-Robin story does make sense,it's just upsetting to see from my perspective watching it as a fan.
Ted described his perfect woman in first episode and it did match Robin. Only thing that really broke them up is that Robin wanted to travel and didn't ever want kids(and eventually found out she couldn't). By 2030, Robin did travel all the places she wanted, and while she could never have kids, Ted does have kids, and his kids love Robin.
Like I said,it all does connect perfectly now, but not in a way I liked. Everything about season 9 is so sad now. The flash forward of Ted-Mother in 2024 now confirms that they knew of her illness and that she'd die! That has to be the saddest rerun scene for anyone who has seen the finale and now knows the real meaning of the scene(and not just speculation anymore).

Re: How I Met Your Mother: Season 9 (The Final Season)
BenGerman, I see where you're coming from.
Spoilerand I do give them credit for bucking sitcom tradition and not having everything wrap up all nice and perfectly, but if ever there was a series and a character that needed that, it would be How I Met Your Mother and Ted. After all the **** the character went through, I don't think it was too much to ask that things fall into place for him. He finally met the perfect girl. The series should have ended with that.
The Barney & Robin storyline...eh, I can kind of swallow. I do hate that Barney just went right back to his same old ways. I agree that they had ALL of this stuff planned out from the first episode, but it really seemed like they just threw things together for the Barney character in the final episode. But we all knew from the beginning that Robin was more invested in her career than she could ever be in her love life.
