I don't know that the writers are trying to sell us that at all. That scene under the umbrella was one of the best scenes I've ever seen and it shows that they aren't trying to sell us that Robin is the perfect one for Ted, because it's been made blatantly obvious this season that his "soulmate" is Tracy.

What they did do, was show Ted trying to move on from a past that he was living in for 6 years. The moment when the mother told Ted to "not live in his stories" is one that holds significance in the series as the whole plot of the show ultimately hinged on the fact that Ted was telling a story. When he finished telling it, it could be inferred that Ted was finally done living in his stories of Tracy and finally ready to date again.

That's what I got out of it. So why do you think he went back to Robin? By the title of the show I thought it'd be about the mother but it was in fact about Robin all along. I guess I just felt strung along for 9 seasons.

Who knows how they felt about ending unless they actually say it.

I saw Cobies interview on late show and she couldn't say a single word about what happened(show was probably taped before the episode aired?) so it wasn't really much of a HIMYM interview in the end.

Really hoping to hear some sort of interview from one of the characters about the show and being able to talk about the ending.

They spent more time on a ****ing extra curly fry than they did on the damn mother dying.

Re: How I Met Your Mother: Season 9 (The Final Season)

It doesn't need to be on screen. That's the point. Leave it up for interpretation if you want. A finale that had him explaining how she died (if they went with that route) and then having a long monologue to the kids about how even if you find your soulmate, life keeps changing and fate keeps working and then signing off would have been INFINITELY, INFINITELY better. And meant WAY more.

Then if a fan wants to think that he should go after Robin now, then they can think that. And if they want to imagine The Mother as "his one lotto win" then they can think that too. But instead they went with some goofy, stupid joke stuff where the kids just heard the entire damn story of how he met their mother and instead of a tear in their eyes they just moved on and said "Oh, okay then, GO AFTER AUNT ROBIN NOW! **** our mom!"

How you can't see why people are upset or at the very least not understanding why is beyond me, because I certainly understand your side.

Looking back at entire series. They could've finished it up after 7 seasons if this was type of ending they had.
The funny thing is had they wrapped it all up before the final 2 seasons or so, I think I would have been much more satisfied with the ending than I was. At that point I was still on board with Ted and Robin being together. But so much work went into trying to dismiss them together towards the end run that it took just about everything away from that final moment.

For example, Ted's story about his first date with Tracy, he's talking about how he finally became the man he had to be to meet her and that years ago he probably would have made some grand speech and told her he loved her right then and there, yet all those years later he still goes and gets the blue french horn again for Robin.

But I absolutely adore her, the times we have spent together are awesome. Same thing here: logically speaking, Ted's kids love Robin based on what time they have spent with her.
But it's diff though, their mom died and they're telling Ted to go after someone they might have only ever seen like 1-2 times a year at most(and know she's barely around to begin with and broke up with Ted and Barney for basically same reason that she's too devoted to work and all that).

But also...it seems like the kids have very little connection to Marshall/Lily. Don't think they ever really mentioned any moment with the kids and them. Only time was Ted telling them how their "cousin Marvin was born". They made it seem like Daisy and the 3rd kid(despite both of them being much closer in age to Teds kids(Daisy was 1 year older than Penny, and the 3rd kid I think was same age as Luke)) weren't important at all in the kids lives, and Barney and his kid meant nothing to future ted and his kids either.

And also...when we first really go to see the mother, Ted even said something like "You remember the seven hour long detour your mother made us take to see ___". If the mother died years ago when the kids were 8 and 6,and the road trip likely happened in the summer(when they were even younger), how exactly did even that make sense? Not saying just cause they were young they wouldn't remember, but it was some small event that happened several years ago but they made it seem like it was something that their mother had done recently.

Am I wrong in feeling like the mother ultimately didn't even matter?
Nope. It definitely was never about the mother at all. She turned out to be the ultimate red herring. It's a shame too as she was quite the likeable character.

I just realized something, some screenshots released before the finale didn't actually air in the finale...They had screenshots like the playbook 2 and stuff, but stuff like this DIDN'T make the finale...seems real strange:

So there's basically a full episode worth of stuff they could've had? Producers probably knew people would be mad, but wanted a way to get people to still buy the DVD in the end. Kinda funny to think how much time wasters we had in the season yet there wasn't enough time for 18 minutes of other things.

lol, never realized just how good the ending would be if it gets edited by someone to be like this:

The "end of the aisle" during when Barney/Robin got married is part of the series finale, and after that scene, we get the scene that opened up the series finale(with Barney remembering he met the mother before) and then Ted not wanting to play "Have you met Ted". All of that stays the same, and the following scene would be the final scene at the train stop where Ted meets the mother.

So really, just take less than 10 minutes of the series finale, add it onto the 2nd last episode of the series, and that'd be a great ending right there.

As much as I hate the ending, imagine if the final scene of the show was something like Ted and the kids going to visit Robin(Ted with the blue french horn) and then after ringing the doorbell and Robin looks out the window, the kids are both just like "Aunt Robin....have you met Ted?"

This was also so brutal. No way teenagers, even six years later, are going to be all bubbly after hearing that story and encouraging their father to go after Aunt Robin. Again, just completely unrealistic.
