I created a topic about creative writing a while back and shared a little of my zombie apocalypse book. I am wanting to post parts of it on here and get some feedback. I'm also hoping that with time maybe a few of you will start to enjoy it and demand more! Lol

It's not complete but I have a lot of it done. I plan on posting a little at a time to let everyone catch up and leave feedback. There may be some grammatical and spelling errors as my computer died and I have typed much of this on an iPhone.

I hope you enjoy. I appreciate you reading, and appreciate any feedback.

My Zombie Apocalypse Book: Here's To Tomorrow

Here's to Tomorrow: Part 1

The room was quiet while the President spoke. It was regarding the terrorist attack that happened that morning. Around 9:00 am Eastern time car bombs blew all over the country. New York, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Detroit, Dallas…everywhere.

The President explained that obviously this was an act of terror and that, while we can not let this stand, we need to be safe. We can’t let it affect our everyday life. We need to still go to work, go to school. Live, but live cautiously. Hard to do when a massive terrorist attack just took place all over our country, and we have no idea who did it, or why.

While the President spoke, most of the nation was glued to the television. Some were sleeping, surfing the internet or playing their XBox. But most were watching.

As the President spoke about what our next step was, the picture froze for a moment. Just enough to leave the President staring into the screen. The picture skipped a couple of frames like it was trying to keep up, but just couldn’t. Finally, the screen went black. Then, green. A bright, blinding green color in the darkness of most living rooms. Then a sound. Not just any sound. Not a soothing sound. A high pitched screaming sound. Deafening. Something you’d never heard before. Something you’d never want to hear again.

A ray of light snuck through the curtains of the bedroom. A perfect straight line going across the bed, crossing across Christian’s closed eyes. A bird chirped, and his eyelids fought open. He woke up in a little bit of confusion. It seemed like he had slept way too long. He pushed himself up and turned to look at his clock. It was flashing 7:05 AM. Christian knew it wasn’t that early. He grabbed the clock to look at it. Not sure why he grabbed it. It wasn’t going to change the fact that the electricity somehow went out last night. And that he was late for work. He turned to the other side of the bed and grabbed his iPhone. He unlocked it and looked at the time. It was 9:05. The electricity went out right about 2:00 AM on the dot. He was supposed to be at work at 7:00!

“Sh*t!” He yelled, jumping out of bed and grabbing his khaki pants. Slipping them on and grabbing a polo from his dresser was something he had done before, he wasn’t always the most punctual worker.

He now ducked into the bathroom one door down from his bedroom and checked on his hair situation. It was a little messy, but that was in style nowadays. Screw it, it’ll have to work. He thought.

He now got into the living room where his German Shepherd Gina was lying on the couch sound asleep. Christian rescued her from a nearby animal shelter when she was a pup. He named her Gina after MMA fighter Gina Carano. The dog seemed to be a fighter just like Carano.

Christian grabbed his shoes and quickly slipped them onto his feet. The black socks on his feet were the same he wore to work yesterday. The same he feel asleep in right after the Presidential speech came on. What did he say about those car bombs? I bet it was China. We’ve been worrying about China for way too long. They finally got us- It’s too late for that! You’re late! He thought.

He walked into the kitchen and swung open the stainless steel refrigerator door. He thought for a moment about grabbing a quick lunch, but decided he’d stop by Rally’s at lunchtime. He loved their French fries anyway.

He pat Gina on the head and headed out the door with his keys in hand. A Cincinnati Reds keychain holding them all together. The dog watched as he shut the door, almost as to say, You didn’t let me out!

Christian approached his blue Honda Civic. As he grabbed at the door handle, he looked over and saw his elderly neighbor Mr. Walton leaning up against his gold car. He looked like he was possibly trying to unlock the door, but he wasn’t moving. Did he have a heart attack? he thought. Is he okay?

Christian dropped his hand from the car handle and walked toward his neighbor. Mr. Walton had to be about 70 years old. A heart attack could be entirely possible. As Christian approached he put his hand out to place it on Mr. Walton’s shoulder.

“Mr. Walton, you okay?” He asked placing his hand on his shoulder. Just then, he felt a warmth. It is November. It’s cold out here. Christian’s windows almost needed scraped. How is this elderly man warm?

Christian looked back toward his car, and then back to Mr. Walton. Now, the old man turned his head to Christian, and revealed that his dark green eyes were no longer there. They were replaced with blank white eye balls. Scary. Gross. Strange.

“What the hell?” Christian asked shocked, backing away from Mr. Walton.

The old man turned toward Christian. He let out a heart stopping growl, Rawwrrrr! Christian stumbled back and fell to the concrete. His head bounced off the black top. He backed away using his shoulders and legs to move from the approaching old man.

Mr. Walton reached down at Christian’s feet. Christian moved his legs rapidly, making sure he couldn’t get a hold of him. He had no idea what had gotten into his nice old neighbor, who always seemed to crack jokes while outside smoking his cigarettes when Christian took out the garbage. Christian finally, feeling he has no other option, planted his foot right square in Mr. Walton’s forehead. Walton fell to the ground and smacked the back of his head on the street. Christian heard the pop, and assumed he was now unconscious. That is until he looked up and saw that he was attempting to get back up to his feet.

Christian now popped back up to his feet. Still feeling oozy, he ran, almost tripping up the slight decline of his front yard, and jumped to the front porch. He unlocked his door quickly, slid in, and slammed it shut. He held the black door shut with his foot, and locked both locks.

“What the f*ck was that?!” He yelled as Gina had already jumped to all fours and was standing ready to pounce with her black and brown fur standing straight up on her back. “What was that Gina?!”

Christian peered through the peep hole in his door, watching as Mr. Walton got back to his feet. A big foot print now on his head, the old man got to his feet, and turned toward the warehouse across the street.

Christian lived on a dead-end road. He was the last house on the left. Across the street from a small warehouse. He often wondered what they did over there in the blue building, but never wanted to put the energy in to actually find out. Behind the warehouse was the railroad tracks. When he bought the place he wondered if the train would keep him up at night. It never did. Beside Christian’s yellow house is a deep creek. So deep even in a big rain, it didn’t flood. In the few years he had lived here, it only flooded once, and it didn’t even come close to the house.

So what the hell is going on with him? His eyes, were just white. What happened? He wondered in his head.

He kept watching out the small peep hole, wondering what Mr. Walton would do next. And where was Mrs. Walton? Was she okay?

As these thoughts rushed through his head, one of the few workers from the warehouse stepped outside. He was an older black man. Dressed in blue jeans and a red windbreaker. Stumbling out the door, the man walked beside Mr. Walton. Both men were walking, aimlessly, slightly limping. It was eerie seeing the way they kept pace with each other. Not even acknowledging each other’s existence.

Christian leaned further, putting his hands up onto the cold door. Another worker exited the warehouse. A woman. Middle aged with dark brown hair. Blue jeans and a pink and white sweater. She peered over toward Christian’s house. He ducked down, for a moment thinking she could see him. He almost chuckled realizing she wouldn’t be able to see him through the peep hole. He looked back through it, and saw the woman had vacant white eyes like Mr. Walton. She too turned, and headed the same direction as the two men. Stumbling, in the same pace.

“What the f*ck? They’re all white-eyed. They’re all f*cked up. They’re all...infected,” Christian said out loud.

Christian had no idea what he was witnessing. Was this some kind of crazy joke? Was it Halloween all over again? Or was something happening? Some kind of crazy phenomenon. He decided to call his parents. They had just moved to Florida. He wanted to make sure they were okay. He pulled his iPhone from his pocket and unlocked it. He looked down at it to see the time now read 12:18 PM. It’s not noon now. He thought. He looked up at the cell phone service bars. Nothing. The towers must have been down.

Although most people had gotten rid of their land line phones, Christian always kept one, just in case of emergencies. He grabbed it, but no dial tone. Just now he realized, in the kitchen, his microwave, which usually shined the time in a green display, was blank. He turned to his cable box. Nothing. The electricity was out.

“No electricity. No cell phone service. What the hell am I supposed to do?” He asked himself, backing away from the door and falling to the love seat a few feet from his flat screen TV.

He peered over at the TV, and his XBox. It reminded him of a video game. Is this some kind of crazy apocalypse? Everything is off. Everyone is acting weird. Is it a dream? Wake up dammit! Wake up!

Christian’s eyes slowly lifted. He was sitting in the same chair. Holy sh*t it was a dream! How late am I for work now?! He thought. He looked over at the cable box again. Nothing.

“Dammit!” Christian yelled kicking his feet at the floor and throwing his arms up in the air. He looked like a kid throwing a fit, but he didn’t give a sh*t.

Christian stood, and walked toward the fridge. He wanted to grab a Mountain Dew or something. But he hesitated. He wasn’t sure how long the power would be out, or if it would even come back on. Might as well let that cold air stay in the fridge.

Christian turned and walked back toward the door. Looking out the peephole again, worrying to see more of those things…those infected things.

So far, nothing. No infected, no police, no cars. But wait. All of a sudden he saw something moving. Down the railroad tracks. It was a girl. She had long blonde hair, wearing tight blue jeans, black boots, a pink halter top and a purple and white striped sweater over top. She was carrying a purple bookbag and a black case. Looked like it would hold some kind of instrument. She wasn’t limping. She wasn't bleeding. She was just walking. Looking scared. Worried. She had obviously been crying. Her head moving back and forth to monitor the environment around her. Obviously she had had an encounter with some of the infected.

Christian desperately grabbed for the door knob. He wanted to run out there and yell for her to come to him. But it could have attracted more. He kept watch. She turned toward the warehouse and looked around the parking lot. A few cars were parked, but no one was around. She slowly walked through the parking lot, heading toward the creek.

The creek had a metal bridge that had bushes and weeds growing all around it. The bridge led to another vacant parking lot. People say that when the warehouse got built in this neighborhood, the company built the bridge so that they could have their employees be able to park over at the other parking lot, and not clutter up the streets. Since Christian had lived there, he hadn’t seen them that busy. The bridge was rarely used. But this girl was walking toward it. As she neared closer to the creek, Christian opened the door slowly. He looked around for any infected. He didn’t see any, so he headed toward the girl. She didn’t notice him, that is until he spoke.

“Hey there,” he said putting his hands up to try to let her know he wasn’t dangerous.

She turned and saw him. She about fell to the ground. She reached out and grabbed the metal bridge. Letting out a gasp, she turned and hightailed it across the bridge. Looking back every few steps to make sure she was getting away from the strange man, she continued through the vacant parking lot.

Christian thought about letting her go. But she didn’t look like she’d be capable all by her lonesome. So he took off after her. Trying to reassure her, but also not yelling too loud.

“My name is Christian! I’m not one of those things. I’m here to help. My house is right here. You can’t stay out here. I was attacked by one…by one of them!”

She turned back to look at him one more time, and took a turn onto a nearby road. Just then, she suddenly stopped, slamming into a black Mustang that was parked in front of her. She didn’t see it. After she hit it, she froze for a second before falling to the ground. This was Christian’s chance to get to her, and reassure her.

As he approached an infected appeared. An older woman in a purple nightgown. Her gray hair in disarray. She was barefoot and her feet were bleeding. Seemed she had traveled far by the condition of her feet.

Christian and the girl noticed her at about the same time. She didn't notice Christian, but was heading right toward the girl, or what she may call breakfast.

"I got it," Christian said rushing toward the woman. He put his hand up to let the young girl know to stay there. He met the lady with a stiff boot to the chest. She stumbled back and fell to the ground. Christian had now assaulted two of the elderly this morning. On any other day he would be considered a menace to society. Now, he was just doing what any person should do for another person.

"Come on, you'll be safe at my house," Christian said putting his hand out to the girl. The elderly woman was already fighting to get back to her feet.

"I..." the girl began.

“I’m not going to hurt you. I just woke up probably an hour or so ago. Came outside and my neighbor tried to attack me. He had white eyes. He was crazy. I’m here to help. You don’t need to be out here alone. I don’t think those things are just passing through. You are not safe out here.”

She stared at him. Debating on whether to scream, push him away, or just let him take her to his place. The old was back to her feet now. she took a step forward toward the couple. So the girl finally took Christian's hand.

“Ok, let's go,” she replied, putting her hand out for his.

“Okay, here, my house is right over here. There’s no electricity. There’s not a whole lot. But at least you’re surrounded by four walls,” Christian said as he grabbed her hands and raised her to her feet. Her blonde hair bouncing as she got to her feet. And the two took off toward his house.

Christian kept a hold of one of the girl's hands, and led her back across the parking lot. Peeking back over his shoulder to make sure the infected old woman wasn't gaining on them. The girl still had her backpack slung over her right shoulder, and her black case clinched tightly in her left hand. Christian led her up to the porch, and opened up the screen door. Her blonde hair brushed against his cheek as she took a step forward. Christian always had a thing for blondes. His wife was a blonde. But that was in the past now. She had been gone a little over a year now.

She cautiously stepped into the house and looked around. The living room had a nice set of couch and loveseat. Three tan, textured walls and one red accent wall. In front of the red wall, a big TV, and an XBox. Great, a man child. He plays video games, she thought.

She looked over at him. She figured he was in his upper-20’s or early-30’s. She thought he was handsome. He had nice brown hair, and a little scruff of a beard. Probably forgot to shave.

He shut the door behind him and locked both locks again. She dropped the backpack to the ground, and set her case down beside it.

“Is that for an instrument?” He asked curiously, “Are you in the band?”

She shook her head, “Yep, clarinet.”

“What grade are you in?”

“11th. I’m a junior,” she answered.

“Do you have Mr. Parker? Is he your band director?”

She looked confused. Wondering how Christian knew that, “Yeah, I do. How’d you know?”

Christian smiled, “I had him in high school.”

“You were in the band?”

“Yep, I played bass drum my freshman year, and snare drum sophomore, junior and senior year,” he answered.

She smiled. It was nice to be able to talk to someone. It was nice to have a little bit of normalcy. What was going on outside was only going on for a couple of hours, but it seemed like a lifetime. “My name is Zoey. Zoey Cain,” she proclaimed putting her right hand out gesturing a handshake.

“Nice to meet you Zoey Cain. I’m Christian Briggs. Former band member and current graphic designer,” he answered back shaking Zoey’s hand. He looked down at her slender fingers, pink nail polish accented her fingers.

He thought they looked nice.
Just then a noise outside. It startled both of them. Christian quickly peered through the peephole while Zoey backed away, stifling a scream.

“What is it?” she asked almost falling onto the love seat that Christian had just fallen asleep on not a half hour earlier.

“It’s another infected,” he answered.

Zoey looked confused for a moment. Infected? She thought.

“Infected?” she asked now taking a step toward Christian.

"Yeah, I don't know what else to call them. They are crazy, white-eyed infected people,” Christian continued staring out the peephole making sure he and Zoey were safe. "I guess I'm not great with nicknames. I don't know. At least I didn't nickname them something stupid, like my nickname."

“What is your nickname?” Zoey asked curiously.

Damn! I knew she was going to ask that. Maybe I should make one up. The Big Gun, or Sexy Beast…I can’t tell her my nickname is Briggsy. Sounds like I was nicknamed after some afternoon kids cartoon! He thought for a second, before admitting the truth. “They call me Briggsy.”

He heard her snicker under her breath. He wanted to turn and tell her not to laugh. It was his nickname since he was younger. He didn’t make it. If he made it, he would have went with Sexy Beast.

“I know. Sounds stupid doesn’t it?” he admitted.

Zoey thought for a minute. “No, I think it’s kinda…cute.”

This was the first time Christian had been called cute since he was married. Not that he couldn’t have went out and got called cute, or other things, but it felt nice. Maybe it was what was going on outside. Maybe it wasn’t. He didn’t know.

"Christian, I'm getting hungry," Zoey admitted.

Christian thought before responding. “I don’t have much in the fridge. And there’s no electricity. I think there are some Pop-Tarts in the pantry," he said pointing toward the kitchen.

“Pop-Tarts are fine,” Zoey reassured him.

They walked into the kitchen where Christian opened the pantry and grabbed the treats. He set them on the table, opened the box up, and took two out. He handed one to Zoey and broke one in half for himself. He always liked to start with the middle, and eat from the inside out.

“So, how old are you Christian?” Zoey asked taking a seat at his table.

“I’m 28. Getting old. You’re…18?” he predicted.

“Nope, not ‘til January,” she replied.

They sat for a moment, eating the Pop-Tarts. They weren’t sure what to talk about. It’s tough to find conversation when you aren’t sure what’s going on in the world around you. Not sure how long the world around you will last.

After they finished, Christian got up and made his way to the living room. He had two huge picture windows in the living room. One facing the road, the other facing the street and vacant parking lot across the creek. Why he wasn’t looking through the picture window instead of the peephole was yet to be determined. Maybe just in case an infected would see him.

Christian peered through the peephole again. Meanwhile, Zoey climbed up on his couch. She sat on her knees, pulling the red curtains back and looking out toward the creek. Not a sign of an infected anywhere.

Zoey grew curious, and hungry for more conversation. “You married Christian Briggs?” she asked.

Christian paused. He put his head down, and leaned up against the door. She knew it was a question that he didn’t want to answer.

“I was. She passed away a little more than a year ago,” Christian replied.

“I’m sorry. Do you mind me asking how?” Zoey replied.

“Breast cancer.”

Zoey regretted asking the question. She turned back toward the picture window. About that time, she felt a lick on her butt. It startled her until she realized it was Christian’s dog. She didn’t see the German Shepherd earlier. Must have been in another room.

“Hey there,” Zoey said putting her hand out for the dog to lick.

“That’s Gina. She’s a big baby. But could also rip someone’s head off if she wanted to.”

“Aww, she’s cute. The protector huh?”

Christian smiled, “Yep, that’s my girl. Had her since she was a pup.”

Zoey continued to pet and play with Gina. Seemed like a very nice dog. Meanwhile, Christian kept watch out the peephole. He wasn’t sure what he was looking for. Neither did Zoey. But he felt like he needed to keep watch.

“So what the hell happened? What is all this?” she asked him.

He turned from the peephole, leaning on the door, “I have no idea. I fell asleep last night. Watched a little bit of the President. Turned the TV off, came to bed, and woke up late this morning. Went outside, got attacked by my neighbor, got away, and here we are,” he answered, “what did you do?”

“I was practicing my clarinet. I have a solo in the winter concert next month. Finally I get my solo. Should have had it last year. So I was practicing. Funny, I get my solo, and the world goes straight to hell.” She kinda of laughed, but then almost started to cry. She held it in. “I saw…something.”

Christian was curious. He leaned toward her. “What? What did you see?”

Zoey readjusted on Christian’s couch. It’s one of those couches where you just kind of sunk in. Then it was tough to get out.

“While walking to school, I saw a car driving. Swerving. It nailed a parked car. It was a woman and it looked like her dad. He was older. One of those things came out around a house. He must have heard the crash. The old man saw him, and got out of the car. I think he thought he needed help. The old man put his hand out, and the thing…”

“The infected?” Christian interrupted.

“The infected, grabbed his arm and bit it. The old man screamed. He fell down and the thing kept biting him. It looked like he was eating him. The woman jumped out of the car and…”

Zoey began to cry. Christian felt terrible for her. But he wanted to hear. He didn’t know how to comfort her. He can’t say, everything is going to be okay. He didn’t know that. And he didn’t want to sit down by her and put his arm around her. He wasn’t that guy…

“What happened Zoey?”

“The woman tried to stop him. She pushed the limper off of the old man. She began to tussle with it. Just then, the old man stood. He grabbed the woman and bit her. Then…” tears began to roll down Zoey’s cheeks, “then they ate her.”

Christian was shocked. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“They…ate her? ATE her?”

Zoey couldn’t say another word. She leaned forward and vomited on the floor. Christian was quick to jump to her. He put his hand on her back, and leaned in.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry you saw that. Oh my gosh.”

Zoey wiped her mouth. “I took off running. Walking down the train tracks. That’s when you saw me I guess.”

Christian was shocked. “So, he got bit…”

“Mmhmm”

“And turned…”

“Mmhmm”

“And they ate her?”

“Yes.” Zoey responded.

“Oh my God.”

“Mmhmm”

Christian stood. He looked out the big picture window one more time. Now it was obvious that this wasn’t just some weird occurrence. It wasn’t just Mr. Walton and the two warehouse workers. It was more places. It was dangerous. It was downright scary. He walked into the bathroom and grabbed a towel.

He wiped Zoey’s vomit up while she sat back on the couch. She attempted to help, but he held his hand up. He could handle a little vomit. Plus, what she just saw, she deserved a break.

After tossing the towel into the trash, he walked back into the living room and sat on the love seat. He brushed his hair back and rubbed his forehead.

“Where do you live? Where are your parents?” Christian asked.

“My dad moved away. My mom works in Trenton,” Zoey replied. Trenton was a few towns over. No way Zoey would be getting over there. “I didn’t see her this morning. Last I saw, she was watching the Presidential speech. I didn’t want to watch it. The car bombings were enough to scare me. I didn’t want to hear about it also. So I went to my room to practice.”

They both sat in silence. Gina had curled up onto her fluffy dog bed which was placed in the corner inbetween the couch and the love seat. In moments like this, Christian would turn the TV on. He’d love to do that right now. Turn it to CNN and see just what the hell is going on. But he couldn’t.

“So we’ve got a problem. We can’t go out there. Apparently if you get bitten by one of those things, you can turn into one. Did they see you after the crash? Did they try to get you?” Christian asked.

“No, they didn’t see me. And yes, we’ve got a problem. I don’t know what to do. Stay here and protect ourselves I guess. Do you have any weapons? A gun? Anything?”

“Um, no. I’m not a weapon type of guy. I have a screwdriver around here somewhere,” Christian said looking down the hallway, hoping maybe it would come to him where it’s at. “Oh yeah, I have a small hatchet out in the shed! My mom bought it for me for Christmas one year. Never thought I’d use it. Now I can!”

His excitement quickly calmed. Now he can use it, to protect himself and this high school junior from limpers. Oh boy.

“Well, do you think you can make it out there and back quick enough without getting caught by one of those things?” Zoey asked.

“I can watch out for you.”

“Yeah, let’s do it. Just watch out my back door. If you see anything, just yell,” Christian said.

“What if me yelling makes it come to me?”

“Well, I’ll just make sure that it keeps following me. Then I can either chop it, or I can outrun it. They don’t look very fast.”

They stood and headed toward the back door, not before Christian grabbed the key off of his key hook nailed up by the front door. Zoey patted him on the shoulder before he opened the back door, looked both ways as if he were crossing a busy street, and headed toward the shed. It wasn’t too far away. Just a lot of grass separating him from it. But in the situation, it seemed far. Christian kept his head on a swivel, looking back and forth, back and forth as he approached the shed. He unlocked the lock, swung the heavy door open, and disappeared inside.

It seemed like a lifetime. Zoey kept watch, wondering if maybe somehow an infected could have gotten in from the back. She looked back for a moment to see where Gina was. All they needed was for the dog to get out. Unless, she thought, would a dog get infected? Would a dog change?
She looked back outside. Her thought was interrupted by a sound. She peeked to her right, and there it was, an infected. An old man. She didn’t know it, but it was Mr. Walton. He reached out to grab her, as if she was a tasty snack. Arrrggg!

Zoey thought about letting out a loud scream, but instead backed into the kitchen, letting the screen door shut. She looked back and opened the first drawer she could see. Thank God, there’s a knife! She thought. She picked it up, and headed back for the door.

As Mr. Walton looked through the glass, Zoey violently shoved the door forward, knocking the old man stumbling down from the concrete steps, and falling to the ground. Zoey jumped over the old man’s body, hesitated for one second, and jammed the end of the knife into his forehead, with more force than she knew she could. The sound was unforgettable, and indescribable.

Blood poured out of the back of the old man’s head, as well as oozed out of the hole. Christian heard the commotion, and ran out of the shed with hatchet in hand.
