    Marcia Wallace died

Statement from executive producer Al Jean, on behalf of The Simpsons:

I was tremendously saddened to learn this morning of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace. She was beloved by all at "The Simpsons" and we intend to retire her irreplaceable character.

Earlier we had discussed a potential storyline in which a character passed away. This was not Marcia's Edna Krabappel. Marcia's passing is unrelated and again, a terrible loss for all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
She was on a lot of stuff through the 70's and 80's too including the Bob Newhart Show.

Flanders has horrible luck. First wife they killed off, now his new wife they'll have to kill off cause voice actress died in real life.

Wonder what they'll do at the school, cause Edna was one of the main people there(next to Willie and SKINNER)

Animated cartoon cast concerns in a memorial thread. Classy.

She rounded out the Bob Newhart Show so well.

Wait a minute, it was Krabapple? I was calling her Crandall. Why didn't somebody tell me? Aww I was making an idiot of myself...

Sad. I watched her on Newhart as well as the Simpsons. She also had appearances on Full House as the PTA member who had a crush on Joey. She will be missed...

I read that the Simpsons will "retire" her character, not "kill her off".

              RIP Marcia.

I saw her in many episodes of The Bob Newhart show, but didn't even know she had a gig on The Simpsons.

                R.I.P.

Some of her earlier stuff I was far too young to notice or whatnot but I did see reruns of the original Newhart show and she was excellent in that. She's best known to me as Ms. Krabappel and it'll be interesting what they do about it since she was fairly integral to the school setting.

Always loved the episode where Bart pretends to be her pen pal lover Woodrow. I thought Ms. Wallace did excellent voice work in that one episode.

yes, it replaced the usual opening of Bart writing a phrase on the chalkboard.
