What is that kind of picture called...

... Where it is a bunch of other pictures that make up a much larger picture of something?

For example, maybe it's a bunch of random photos of whatever, and the thousands of mini-pictures end up being an Abraham Lincoln headshot.

Furthermore, how are these done? Is there a pattern to arranging the photos, or do they cheat and tamper with all of the photos as they do it? Is there a program that just ends up making this happen?

I'll find examples on the Internet if this doesn't make sense, but then again if I can actually find it I'll probably also know what it's called. I still don't know how it's done, though.

EDIT: Okay, here is an example (I've seen better ones though, probably because they use more pictures).

    Spoiler

I guess they just call them mosaics, but obviously it's a specific type.

Anyone know what is done to make these? Seems impossibly complicated unless I'm missing something here, even if it's a program that does this.

The term you're looking for is "collage". I don't know the ins and outs of how to make one though.

Ah. I thought collages were just a random assortment of photos, not necessarily an arranged design. Just like I thought mosaics were just a random assortment of materials to arrange a design, not necessarily of photos.

Thanks. I'll keep looking into the matter and look back into here if anyone else has more insight.

Photo mosaic, and I'm sure there are programs to automate the process. Not sure how they work, probably just pooling images from whatever files you point it to. I'd imagine mining google similar image search would be a good source for the little pictures, but no idea if any work like that.

They are sometimes called a collage, but it's been kind of branched into mosaic being typically all uniform tiles, where collage is differently sized images.

I didn't know all this off the top of my head, I google-fu-ed it.
