    2014 Academy Awards Discussion

With the nominations being announced today, I figured it was a good time to start this up.

    Best Motion Picture:
    Spoiler

Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
    Spoiler

Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
    Spoiler

    Achievement in Directing
    Spoiler

Her and Nebraska were easily my favorite movies this year, but most of the buzz seems to be around 12 Years a Slave. I still have a ton of movies to watch so I won't be able to make my picks for awhile.

I've seen all the Best Movie nominees except for Nebraska and Philomena. I've seen all the Actor nominees except Dern and 4 of the 5 director nominees.

Best Movie should go to 12 Years a Slave or Wolf. I'm the type of guy who never gets emotional watching movies and I damn near bawled watching 12 Years. That movie was so powerful and well acted by everyone in it. With that said, I enjoyed Wolf more and wouldnt be mad if it won.

Leo should win easy and if not Leo it should be Chiewtel.

    Director should be Cuaron.

I'm gonna watch Blue Jasmine and August this weekend so I'll hold off on the best actress pick.

While I agree, I don't see them going two years in a row picking a director who doesn't win Best Picture.

You are probably right. While it would be nice to see McQueen become the first black person to win Best Director, I think what Alfonso did in Gravity was incredible and should win hands down.

Really hope that Leo gets the award. He put on an incredible performance in Wolf of Wall Street.

He's put on enough good performances that hopefully he's due. Still need to see Wolf.

I thought Tom Hanks would at least get a nomination.

                Bale stole his nomination.

I hope you mean for Captain Phillips and not for Saving Mr. Banks. I'm assuming that's what you meant, but a couple of people I was talking to started saying he should be nominated for the latter. Anybody who has seen the movie knows Colin Farrell would be nominated before him (or at least should be). Hanks wasn't anything special in Saving Mr. Banks. I still really badly want to see Captain Phillips, though.

I liked American Hustle, but don't think it deserves as much praise as it's getting. The actors deserve what they get, but if Best Picture is a combination of everything, it had pretty stale story elements despite all character nuances. Nothing like The Fighter and the [less impressive] Silver Linings Playbook. I'll want it to win things personally, but I'm wondering if its wins will truly be justified.

Oh, and I'm up in the air with Bullock for Gravity (so if she wins I'm all good with it), but please give Gravity all technical awards possible. Just wow on that film!

I was surprised. He was great in Captain Phillips. Looks like Bruce Dern pushed him out.

Still need to see Her and Nebraska. American Hustle being nominated for best picture is no surprise, but I don't get it. I mean the film was okay, just didn't blow me away like it did with others. Hopefully the academy gets it right and 12 Years a Slave wins.

Yes, I'm talking about Captain Phillips. I really thought that was an amazing role by him.

I'm not amazed by Gravity as a movie. It has spectacular effects and if it doesn't win most technical awards, that will be unexplainable. BUT, I'm not impressed with the storyline at all, also there isn't that much acting in it. It's an impressive spectacle, but not that much of a movie. If Sandra Bullock wins, I'm so done with the Oscars.

For me, the biggest snub is Rush. I know F1 is not such a big thing in USA and therefore it was expected to be snubbed by the Oscars, but still. Not a single nomination for a movie that has absolutely brilliant camera work, editing, effects AND a soundtrack by Hans Zimmer??? Seriously? Anyone who watched that movie can confirm that it is a truly amazing visual and audio experience.

Also, I really hope Barkhad Abdi wins best supporting role. He was even better than Hanks, at least in my opinion.

It would be a bigger upset then Marisa Tomei for My Cousin Vinny. Not going to happen.

I thought this movie absolutely sucked imo...seemed like 3hrs of never ending boredom.
