    Home Theater Assistance

Hey guys. I need some input for a home theater system I am putting together. I have the speakers and receiver picked out, but need some help on deciding which subwoofer to get. Below are the links to the speakers and receiver I'll be purchasing.

    Receiver:
    http://www.crutchfield.com/p_022RXA1...-RX-A1020.html

    Speakers:

Here is a list of subs I'm interested in:

    Definitive Technology
    ~ SuperCube 4000: $799
    ~ SuperCube 6000: $999

    Klipsch
    ~ SW-112: $599
    ~ SW-115: $849

    Power Sound Audio
    ~ XV15: $799

    SVS
    ~ PB-1000: $499
    ~ PB-2000: $799
    ~ Dual PB-1000: $949

I am still open to suggestions and would like to keep this under $1,000.

    Thanks guys!

I'm not very versed on subwoofers, despite my little bit of knowledge in audio products.

We have an active thread where some people might be able to answer your questions, though:

If you are willing to spend that kind of coin, go with a SVS sub.

Thanks for this recommendation. I did stumble across this site before but to be honest, I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for ha. Would you be able to explain to me why you this SVS is better and what the difference is between sealed and ported - advantages and disadvantages as well? Thank you!!

I was going to recommend SVS too - http://www.svsound.com/subwoofers/ported-box
They offer free shipping both ways with a 45 day tryout.

What are the dimensions of the room you are going to be in?

I was in the same search as you a few months ago. I don't think a single person ever recommend a Klipsch sub (I have Klipsch speakers so I am not just bashing). I would also say don't make the same mistake I did and end up wanting to bump up a level in a few months. I originally linked to the PB-1000 above, but if you have the budget just go with the PB-2000.

You can find some good forums here - AVS forum. Also typing in "[Sub model] AVS" in Google will bring up threads for the item.

Are you using those speakers for your fronts, center, and rears?

I saw that free shipping and try out - really like those options.

The room dimensions are 20×13; however the room is an open floor plan into a breakfast nook and kitchen. It's a new construction hone. Also, the speakers are what's offered by the electrical contractor doing the home theater. As of now, I'm doing the typical 5 speaker surround.

My father on law recommended klipsch, lol, so I wanted your guys opinions.

Looks like this guy is almost in the same situation as you. Notice the SVS recommendations

So it's a massive space. If you have the budget I would just go with the PB-2000 at minimum.

The guys who have posted above and authentic if he chimes in will know more than me, but it seems like for $560 (retail) a pop for those speakers is a heck of a lot. I've never researched in-wall/ceiling speakers. Do you absolutely have to do all in-wall or can you go with traditional speakers in the front?

Is the contracter going to wire for 7.2? I saw that's what the receiver was capable of. If the contractor isn't going to you could also look into a cheaper 5.1 receiver or one in that price range that might deliver a little bit more power.

I have the Klipsch Icon series of speakers so I am a fan. For that price though I haven't seen anyone say go with a Klipsch, Polk, or some other store brand over SVS or some other direct internet retailer. I have a BIC PL-200 sub btw and have been debating upgrading to something bigger even though I just got it in November.

Going by your username, it almost appears that you would settle for Harman Kardon's instead.

Thanks for all of your input guys.

I'm definitely going to consider the SVS sub options.

As far as the speakers go, yes I do have to have them in wall. It was either in wall or in ceiling, or nothing haha. As of now, it's being wired as 5.1 (they haven't started the wiring yet). I emailed the contractor yesterday asking if it could be wired for 7.2.

I'm going to hop over to the AVS forums as well for suggestions. Keep it coming if anyone else has any thoughts.

If he won't/can't wire for 7.2 I would definitely do some research on a 5.1 receiver. Although You may find that the one you have is great since it's on sale. I think it would be pretty easy to add a second sub if you ever wanted to without it being pre-wired. It's one cable and probably wouldn't have to go very far since it sounds like the wife is trying to keep the clutter to a minimum.

I was watching "Catch a Contractor" last night so I am now paranoid about all contractors. I think I might email him and see what gauge of wire he is using also. Make sure he isn't going cheap with 18 or 20 gauge. 14 gauge is what a lot of people use, at minimum 16. 12 is an option too.

Okay. Well I just realized I don't have good side walls, so looks like it'll be 5.1. I also asked about the wiring and he will be using 16 gauge.

If anyone has any suggestions for a 5.1 receiver that has similar or better specs than the Yamaha I am interested in, let me know.
