Netflix Raising Streaming Subscription Price for New Users

Netflix will raise the price of its all-you-can-watch streaming service by $1 to $2 dollars per month. The change goes into effect within next two to three months for new members in the U.S.

According to TheWrap, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and CFO David Wells delivered the news in a letter to investors earlier today. The letter said, “Our current view is to do a one or two dollar increase, depending on the country, later this quarter for new members only”.

This is the first rate increase since Netflix’s disastrous attempt to spin off its streaming service into a separate company in 2011. That move was so universally disliked Netflix reversed its decision, never actually implementing the plan.

The current price hike looks much more likely to stick. It was first tested in Ireland where, according to the company, it had “little impact”. The new rate has long been expected by media analysts due to the rising costs of licensing and producing content for the streaming service.

Lest existing users think they’re getting a pass, the letter also included the following ambiguous language, “Existing members would stay at current pricing (e.g. $7.99 in the U.S.) for a generous time period.”

Their selection has improved, but with a few bucks more I'd hope they would try to reach out to other studios.

As an adult its not worth a few bucks more for me, but the amount of cartoons for my son to watch its worth it.

I'll have to start cancelling once I'm not watching anything. I've had it nom stop to 3-4 years now, but when I start a show on Amazon I'll go a few weeks without touching Netflix.

I don't use my Netflix a ton, but I do like the service. If it goes up a couple of more bucks for streaming down the line it's not a big deal to me.

I would pay $20 a month for Netflix streaming so this doesn't bother me.

It was only $1/month? Why am I not subscribed to this? (I use my sister's account, but still)

Where did you possibly come up with that from?

Even the very last sentence of the article states that the current price is 7.99.

I find the more I use Netflix the less impressed I am by it.

Prime just scored HBO streaming so that's a big hit.

I don't use Netflix that much aside from a few shows and movies the wife and I will watch but my daughter gets use out of it which makes it worth it to me.

That's my bad. I read the first sentence as: "Netflix will raise the price of its all-you-can-watch streaming service from $1 per month to $2 dollars per month." I kind of just stopped there and posted.

That's why I was surprised, because I thought that it was $7.99 as you said. Then I thought back like: "Maybe that was for renting discs as well," and ignored it.

Very good point. There's not too many movies on there to my liking. Currently I am using it for watching the rest of Breaking Bad (almost thru season 2), and for season 2 of arrow to drop.

Netflix Officially Raises Price for New Customers: http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/05/...-new-customers

If all good things don't come to an end, they cost more. Isn't that how the saying goes? That's what's happening with the Netflix as they increase pricing for new subscribers to their streaming service. Word about an impending price hike of $1 or $2 more dollars more month spread a few weeks ago, but now it's official.

According to The Wrap, effective today, Netflix is raising the price from $7.99 to $8.99 per month. The new rate only applies to the streaming side and only for new customers - for now.

7Yeah just got the email and it said that as an existing member, they guarantee my rate of $7.99 won't change for at least 2 years.
