30 Years Ago This Month - Prince's 'Purple Rain'!
Prince fans all over will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of one of the iconic LPs of the 80s. The movie was mediocre (at best), but the soundtrack is one of the greatest ever. It catapulted Prince to superstardom, and was the high point of his career (even though 1999 was his best work, IMO).Tags: None -

I just watched this two weeks ago. Hard to believe it's been 30 years since the original release. As I've said, it's one of those movies that when you see it on TV, you get sucked in to watching the entire thing. Partly for the bad acting (Prince), goofiness (Morris Day) and outstanding music.Currently Playing:

I always wondered what type of music Prince would have created/produced had he started out about a decade earlier. Just could never get into his original stuff (other than "Kiss".... since it had an Eddie Kendricks quality to it). It just seems with his amazing guitar skills and more of a late 60's/70's mindset it would have been interesting.

For You(1978)
Prince(1979)
Dirty Mind(1980)
Controversy(1981)
1999(1982)
Great stuff, man. 'Dirty Mind' is when Prince became Prince. "When You Were Mine" is an all-time classic.
I've always wondered how the movie would have been had Vanity and Prince not broken up. Vanity 6 > Appolonia 6. I loved Vanity's version of 'Sex Shooter'.Comment

Prince.....artist formally known as.......symbol......whatever he calls himself these days.
This album was back when I actually liked him. He became way too weird afterwards.Comment

As far as the "what if Prince started up 10 years earlier" I think his style would have stayed largely the same except his instrument selection would have changed. When I first started listening to Prince the 80s synths/keys kind of kept me from really digging into him. I think I had been listening to Stevie Wonder and some other 60s/70s soul and funk when the thought occurred to me that the synths were basically replicating those funky, soulful brass instruments from those earlier decades. Whether or not that was his intention that was the impression it gave to me. That was the piece that clicked into place for me and started digging into his stuff more.
Dirty Mind is really some nasty ****. Honestly, Prince gets away with just being dirty, but does it in a way that's just smooth and seductive rather than vulgar.
