    Re: Computer Problem

    Re: Computer Problem

you could try to set the DNS to manual and use 8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4.
those are public DNS servers, so if it is a DNS issue, that should allow it to work.

but something tells me that wouldn't work. seems like there is something worse going on.

When you ping www.google.com, does it fail with out showing an IP address?
Try pinging 74.125.30.106, that is a google IP address.

did you run Malwarebytes in safe mode?

is there any other security application installed on the computer(Norton, McAfee, etc)? or is it just using the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender?
If there is another application, try disabling it and see if it works. I've seen Norton completely cut off internet access at times.

also, when you run the ipconfig, what kind of IP address is showing up?
It is something like 192.168.X.X? or something like 169.254.X.X.

It can fix some of them outright.
Ran it and it said there was a problem with the wireless adapter or access point and that it fixed it, still cant get anything to load other then a blank white screen. When I ran it for internet connection it was unable to identify the problem, so of course problem remains.

It's so strange to me. I feel like there has to be a setting somewhere that isn't configured correctly but I've checked everything I can possibly think of and can't find anything. Going into command prompt gives the correct info as I cross referenced it to my own laptop and it's all correct. Nothing is setup as a proxy either so that isnt it. I disabled the firewall, same thing, added Firefox as an exception in the firewall settings and that did nothing as well.

does it have a different IP address than your laptop? It should.

Can you ping the default gateway, which would be the IP address of the router?

I did not run those programs in safe mode, I can always try that if I can figure out how to get Windows 8 to boot into safe mode that is.

When I ping straight google.com it spits back saying it could not find the host google.com and to check the name and try again. However when I ping the actual google IP address it does connect all 4 times and connects at a steady rate. Now that confuses me even more if it can ping that IP address but not the www.google.com address.

There are no other security programs on the PC other then Windows Defender using the built in Windows Firewall.

I haven't tried that but I can. I just booted into safe mode with networking at the moment but can try that here in a minute.

try entering in 74.125.30.106 into a web browser and see if that takes you to google.com. If it does, then there is likely some sort of DNS issue. if that still does not work, there is something else blocking access, virus/malware/firewall.

Tried that right away after being able to ping it, same story, doesn't even appear to attempt to load and just sits on the same blank white screen as before.

I'm running MalwareBytes again but this time in safe mode to see if that will fix it. Going to run SuperAntiSpyware after that and then see if I can't get something to work.

Yeah, it's sounding like it's DNS if it can't connect google.com to its IP address....

How can I go about fixing this though? I'm no CPU expert and everything I've tried has been from searching google and talking to other people smarter then myself.

I ran MalwareBytes in safe mode and it didn't find anything at all.

I did that and it pinged fine, no packet loss.

                          Re: Computer Problem

So after spending nearly 24 hours working on this I came across two suggesstions online.

Open an administrator command prompt and type the following:

                          netsh int ip reset

                          netsh winsock reset

I have no idea what the winsock even does but after doing that I restarted, went back into the command prompt and attempted to ping google.com and miraculously it worked. I loaded the internet up and it is working again. Not sure if one of those two fixed it or both did, not to mention having no idea what the winsock does, but its up and running again with no issues.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help me out, the problem really had me perplexed and I couldn't figure it out until I started looking up fixes for a DNS issue.
