What can I do to reduce lag?
My internet is really pretty slow & I've been wondering if any of you guys had any suggestions. My PS4 is in my living room & my router is in my parent's second floor bedroom due to the fact that that's the only room with a phone jack & what not. So I don't get great reception. Should I get a new router? A wifi range extender? New internet service provider? Any suggestions are welcome, I just want to have a better online gaming experience.

Re: What can I do to reduce lag?
Do an internet speed test to see what type of speeds your getting from your ISP. That should let you know if you just need to upgrade your package or if its your router. Besides that try to game while others are not using the internet. You dont wanna be in a multiplayer match while someone is watching Netflix. It’s easier to do the right thing, than to explain why you didn’t.Comment

According to Verizon I have the best package they can offer me in my area. I've done that download speed test on the PS4 & the fastest I've ever gotten was 1.4 Mbps. & That's when I go on with nobody else using the internet.

Re: What can I do to reduce lag?
Can you connect a PC with an actual cable and see what kind of speeds you get? What speed is the best package supposed to get you? The router they provide might just be a POS. Is it a modem and router all in one or is the router seperate? Might look into buying your own router if it's the latter.Comment

Re: What can I do to reduce lag?
Thank all you guys for the help. I plan on buying a third party router soon, I've come to the conclusion that that is probably my best bet. You guys have any idea what I should look for if I mostly use my internet for gaming ? Once again, thank you all for all your contributions I really appreciate you guys taking the time.

Re: What can I do to reduce lag?
Why don't you take your PS to your existing router, hard wire it and see if the DL/UL speeds are near what your current service is supposed to deliver. Then instead of buying another router, get an extender like this Netgear model:
If it's not your current router being the problem, then you're throwing money at a 3rd party router for what?
P.S. I have that Netgear model and it works great. Takes a little to set up, but not a big deal once I got some assistance from this site and played around with it a bit.Comment

Re: What can I do to reduce lag?
i would suggest looking into a new provider and a cable router because you can get faster speeds i think, i go through Comcast and i get roughly 5 or 6 MBPS me and my wife could both be on our phones and have Netflix going on the PS4 at the same time with no lag issuesComment

Re: What can I do to reduce lag?
Except this is his parents' service, so I doubt he's paying for any of it. He'd have to convince them, even if there is a choice for another provider in his area. If his is anything like mine, there's only one choice.Comment
