    Replacing Astro headset

My son has a pair of Astro A40s. They are the older version with the cord hardwired to the headset. The newer version has a detachable wire.

The wire coming out of the headset we own has puckered and the internal wiring is damaged. I want to replace the headset for him for Christmas and I'm hoping to surprise him, so my roundabout questions to him haven't gotten the info I need.

Does anyone know if the newer headsets will be compatible with the older version of the mixAmp that he has? I would prefer to save the 100 bucks and buy just the headset, if he can continue to use his existing mixAmp.
