Sony pulls plug on The Interview in light of "Guardians of Peace" hackers' demands

I'm surprised there haven't been any threads on this, though I'm sure people are bringing up the topic in other threads.

Anyway, several weeks ago a hacking group that calls themselves the "Guardians of Peace" stole information on current and future projects for Sony, including the next Bond film's entire script.

The have numerous other amounts of data that they've taken from Sony's offices, and they made certain demands. The terrorists won. Sony has given in and cancelled the December 25th release of Seth Rogen and James Franco's upcoming film The Interview.

The moves comes after five major theater chains said they would not screen the film.

I didn't get to read enough about it yet because I have to proctor finals for my kidlings, but I'm sure others can provide more insight about this as well.

Amazing, the least of which is Sony taking a close to $100 million bath.

      GOP? Really? Alright then.

I feel like North Korea is really behind this so it will be interesting to see this play out as I'm sure this isn't over.

Hopefully it gets released somehow still. I really wanted to see this movie.

Reading over it more, here was an important piece of information:

The chains are reacting to a message posted by hackers on Tuesday that threatened a "9/11"-style attack on theaters that screened the film about an assassination attempt by bumbling journalists against North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
A note from the Guardians of Peace group posted online Tuesday morning warned potential moviegoers, "We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time. (If your house is nearby, you'd better leave.)"

"We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places 'The Interview' be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to," it continued.

They didn't really have a choice after the major theater chains decided to not show the movie.

I don't know what you expect man, every main movie chain pulled the movie. Did you read the article?

If anything they can release the movie in the spring and have a better turn out with all the publicity.

What they ought to do is air it over broadcast TV on all the major networks over and over Sony could still make some money and it would be a big fu to the hackers as everyone could watch it.

My guess is when the authorities catch whoever is responsible, they will release the film in theaters (and allow theaters to opt out of doing so as well).

Just make it a pay per view movie right away. The movie looks very stupid though.

If North Korea was behind all of this it was a completely empty threat. Kim Jong Un is a lot of things, but I don't think suicidal is one of them.

Can't blame Sony and the theaters for being cautious though. This could be the best thing that can happen for that movie because when it is inevitably released there will be a lot more hype behind it and will probably make more money

Did they have this big of a problem with Team America? I don't remember.

When this finally hits theaters it will gross exponentially more $$$ than it would have otherwise.

Alamo Drafthouse is holding an anniversary screening of Team America instead of The Interview.
