Ok, ok, I confess. I don't really care that they were gonna show this.... I just don't like Seth Rogen. I don't think he's funny. I just don't.

My thinking as well. They've already put out emails from the CEO and caused a mini-controversy.Comment

Re: Sony pulls plug on The Interview in light of "Guardians of Peace" hackers' demand
I remember hearing this would be a big deal a whiles back, can't remember where or even when. I was mildly surprised to see previews on TV, then this week it's cancelled. I know in some of these foreign countries they "mistake" jokes as threats, but despite how evil NK's leader is, isn't it kind of in really bad taste to kill him as a joke? I would imagine a movie depicting the President getting killed would cause at least some uproar. Just never seemed like a good idea to me.
If anything, this brought to the forefront the new era of modern warfare: electronically. It's crazy because Sony's PSN was hacked within the past 5 years, and there are still holes (though probably completely different areas). Kind of scary.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

Anyway, George Clooney spoke about the attack and hit it out of the park.
Hollywood Cowardice: George Clooney Explains Why Sony Stood Alone In North Korean Cyberterror AttackEXCLUSIVE: As it begins to dawn on everyone in Hollywood the reality that Sony Pictures was the victim of a cyberterrorist act perpetrated by a hostile foreign nation on American soil, questions will be asked about how and why it happened, ending with Sony cancelling the theatrical release of the sa...
DEADLINE: I’ve been chasing the story of the petition you were circulating for a week now. Where is it, and how were these terrorists able to isolate Sony from the herd and make them so vulnerable?
CLOONEY: Here’s the brilliant thing they did. You embarrass them first, so that no one gets on your side. After the Obama joke, no one was going to get on the side of Amy, and so suddenly, everyone ran for the hills. Look, I can’t make an excuse for that joke, it is what it is, a terrible mistake. Having said that, it was used as a weapon of fear, not only for everyone to disassociate themselves from Amy but also to feel the fear themselves. They know what they themselves have written in their emails, and they’re afraid.Comment

Re: Sony pulls plug on The Interview in light of "Guardians of Peace" hackers' demand
Pretty sure we've had quite a few movies over the years showing that exact thing. Hell, the first lady, Vice President, etc. were killed in Independence Day. Nobody had any problems with Zoolander and a pretty significant part of that plot revolved around trying to kill the Prime Minister of Malaysia.Comment

Vic: No Kenny, that's girl versus girl.
Kenny: What's the difference?

Re: Sony pulls plug on The Interview in light of "Guardians of Peace" hackers' demand
As far as something like this in regards to US politics there was an uproar over the 2006 high concept mockumentary Death of a President (2006) which explored the assassination of George W. Bush and the repercussions thereof. I've actually seen the film and it's quite interesting. It's far more high concept and thought provoking than anything The Interview could trot out in its runtime i'm guessing.
Anyways here's the response as noted by Wikipedia:
The central conceit of Death of a President was much criticised by those who believed it exploited the subject of presidential assassination, and that by doing so, was in bad taste. Gretchen Esell of the Texas Republican Party described the subject matter saying, "I find this shocking, I find it disturbing. I don't know if there are many people in America who would want to watch something like that."[7] Hillary Clinton, then junior United States Senator from New York, told The Journal News of Rockland, Westchester, and Putnam counties at the annual New Castle Community Day in Chappaqua that, "I think it's despicable. I think it's absolutely outrageous. That anyone would even attempt to profit on such a horrible scenario makes me sick."[8]
Simon Finch, the co-screenwriter, replied saying that Clinton had not seen the film when she commented.[9] The Bush administration did not comment about the film; as White House spokesperson Emily Lawrimore remarked, "We are not commenting because it doesn't dignify a response."[10] Two U.S. cinema chains, Regal and Cinemark, refused to screen Death of a President,[11][12] which was distributed by Newmarket Films in the United States. CNN and NPR also refused to broadcast advertisements for the film.[13]Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Yep I can see their problem with the movie. In this case I feel like using a real person is a low class move.Comment

I didn't want to see it either but most people aren't outraged because they were dying to see the movie. It's the principle of censorship that's the bigger problem.Comment

Re: Sony pulls plug on The Interview in light of "Guardians of Peace" hackers' demand
I probably would have waited to see this movie on DVD but now I feel obligated to support this movie in any way possible. I just don't see how these theater chains would even be intimidated by these threats anyways, its not like anyone would even remember a certain chain if a attack took place in a theater(Colorado theater shooting for example).
Beyond the chains and Sony canceling this, i feel it was wrong for the media publications to report on the stolen material released by the hackers. Its similar to not showing the nudes from the celebs who were hacked, its a integrity issue in not reporting on ill gotten material. My dog's butt smells like cookiesComment

It was also a completely different era without the benefit of internet and electronic sabotage.
