    Internet Speed Question

Visiting my parent's house and they just recently upgraded their wireless router and modem. My laptop seemed to work fine in their house before the upgrade but since then... very stunted and slow web speed on my laptop.

Everyone else tells me their technology is working just fine. And when I connect my computer directly to the modem/router, it goes as fast as it should. However, the moment it's unplugged, back to slow.

My computer has no speed issues anywhere else (back at home, coffee shops, friend's house). But when I visit my parents, instant wireless downgrade (but again, I seem to be the only one).

Any ideas what might be at play?

    Re: Internet Speed Question

I would say they have some type of MAC address blocker, but then you'd be out altogether.

Maybe they have some type of "guest" feature that only allow some throttled speed? Also, if they have a dual router, maybe you're connecting to a speed that your laptop can't handle.

Sorry, that's all I can think of. I don't really have the technical knowledge about this stuff.

      Re: Internet Speed Question

I actually switched WiFi signals to a neighbor's, then I switched back to this one, and the speed seemed to have corrected itself... for now. Any reason that may have happened? A matter of resetting my selection, if that makes sense?

      False alarm: Still pretty wonky.

Only things I can think of is changing the wireless channel. Maybe your laptop just has an issue with the one the router is using.

Is there a solution for that?

go into the router setup page and change it, usually is 192.168.1.254 but all depends on the router

I thought router setup pages were 192.168.1.1 (router local ip address).

Speed test numbers were solid, from what I've been told.

                  Ping: 13 ms
                  Download Speed: 45 mbps
                  Upload Speed: 11.52 mbps

Any chance the router/modem/phone hybrid just isn't a great piece of equipment? Never had a problem in this house until the switch over.

You're probably better off connecting with someone remotely who can help you when you're at your parents place. Maybe if you have a network tech buddy who can do so when your there it would be better than trying to get piecemeal help from some random guys on a thread.

I will say that OS is often closer too (and maybe even more helpful than) the network tech buddy than "random guys on a thread". Very diverse group of people here willing to help... and those of us that don't know what we're talking about usually sit quiet or make it clear we're just throwing stuff against the wall.

I appreciate posting stuff like this here. I have a much smaller but similar issue so all the troubleshooting tips (and possibly eventually solution) can help others.

Then I think more specific information is needed.
