I figured Stannis knew he was ****ed once half his goonsquad deserted. Even the Red Priestess knew it was a wrap right then and there. Stannis' ultimate role in the game of thrones was to prove he wasn't Azor Ahai, and to get Melisandre and Jon in the same place at the same time; and to put over Shirtless God Ramsay as the greatest military strategist of all time.
Im rewatching the series, and in the beginning they put a strong emphasis on loyalty reigning supreme in Winterfell. Where you can conquer it but the lords will disobey and never bend the knee to the conqueror. So how are the Boltons sooo strong in Winterfell? They stress how over and loyal everyone up there is to the Starks. Everyone says "the north remembers". But man it seems like the north is totally comfortable slurping the Boltons who played a part in massacring the Kings of the north for themselves. Do none of the other houses give a crap? Did they all secretly hate the Starks? Do none of the other houses have ambition and want Winterfell for their own? It seems so odd how the Boltons just own the place now with virtually no resistance. I imagine Stannis failing miserably will dissuade any insurrection from the other north houses as well.
In one of the first episodes Cersai has a big lecture for Jeoffrey about how simply invading and crushing the Starks in Winterfell was a horrific idea. Maybe it would have been easier than she realized.
And on a similar note, does nobody in the north give a crap that the Freys DECIMATED the Starks while they were under their protection as guests? The Freys have gotten off scott free for that! I need some people to get their just desserts man!!
