Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)

    Releases July 31st.

This trailer is several weeks old, but it certainly slipped under my radar somehow.

Good to see Ving Rhames back, too bad no Maggie Q but it looks like there's another female that will serve just fine. Didn't like how quickly Simon Pegg's character stepped up into the action portion of things, but he's funny and it worked out for Ghost Protocol so I can see how the development is playing out.

What's funny is after they went to the tallest building with the Burj Khalifa, I sat there wondering: "Okay, so they can't go taller anymore, now what?" ****ing airplane, man!

Perhaps sadly, this is my most anticipated film of the summer. But hey, I like what these films have become.

I can't lie, after MI:2 I was afraid that this series wouldn't have any longevity but as you said, I really enjoy what this series has transformed into. It creates a nice contrast between these and the Bond films which I think was crucial to it's long term success.

But part of me would love to see one more really dark iteration as an ode to the very first film in the series.

While I agree with this, that's what I think Ghost Protocol was. Simon Pegg's inclusion kept it "lighter," but with this now being nothing more than a Hollywood Blockbuster, GP is the closest you'll get to that.

I re-watched that back in January, and the good scenes that III was missing are still great. The car meet with Tom Wilkinson's character, breaking into the Kremlin, the meetings in the Burj Khalifa, and Jeremy Renner with the giant magnet. I think that all worked out quite well, and while Brad Bird had his own style about it quite like J.J. Abrams with III, if it can continue on these paths I don't think I will complain.

Re: Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)

Just returned from my screening. As my long-winded impressions tend to go, I'll pretty much remain spoiler-free (minus calls to certain scenes).

I have to agree with the critics, this was a great film! Tom Cruise just still has it, and what's funny is I felt like he took more of a backseat in this film than any of the other ones, even though he was nearly involved in every scene (or at least his character's name was mentioned). Although in Ghost Protocol I felt that Simon Pegg was overused or used the wrong way, I thought his role was perfectly used in this one.

The many set pieces really did bring you all over the place on a narrative perspective, but they too were just shot wonderfully and the environment was every bit a part of the action as any of the fight choreography. There is a scene early on in an opera setting that puts the Quantum of Solace sequence to shame in every way possible. When it came to the creativity of the action, it's like they said: "Let's use what has worked before and stick with that with some different wrinkles, then time to time we'll introduce a new element." You name it: car chases, motorcycles, underwater, mid-air assault, use of masks and stealth, lots of running, and perhaps even some plane/train excitement? I'll leave some of it up to your imagination.

I thought the premise regarding the IMF's status felt a bit too much like Ghost Protocol, though. Most current films today wanting to weaken the protag's group structure to level the playing field a bit might run its course soon enough, but it worked well here to tell at least one more story. The villain was kind of different, like Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character in III. I really liked him, though his motives weren't as seemingly threatening as III's Rabbit's Foot or GP's nuclear strike. There is still plenty of suspension of disbelief, well-timed saves, convenient technology and armed enemies who can't hit water if they fell out of a boat, but at the same time while Ethan Hunt has gained more superhero status since I and II, you still feel all of your good guys are mortal, and that is what's most important. Their decisions that are made normally consider the fact that they could actually die so they will actually weigh their options, but then again that is why they're known as the Impossible Mission Force.

I don't know where to rank this, though on a first time through I think I enjoyed this one the most. I never rolled my eyes at a moment, I believed the story where it took me, I felt the entire team's inclusion was necessary to attempt to do what needed to be done, and through it all I like to sit back and watch a guy like Cruise ambitiously do every single stunt that he does. It just makes the action pieces that much more enjoyable when you really feel that he is taking on that role of Ethan Hunt. Every action scene earns its moment, in other words.

I loved it. Go check it out!

There are some cool landscaping shots to open scenes, but compared to III and GP there aren't too many large scale set-pieces. Most of them play pretty small and close. The sound wasn't anything extraordinary either, with the exception of a bit of a redux of the original score. There are a couple of nice loud gunshots too, but this isn't the best sound I've ever heard in a film nor does it have the best visuals (I will say I think it was better directed than GP, though).

Saw it last night and I found it really enjoyable. I loved the fact that there weren't many shoot-outs and it was more espionage action. Rebecca Ferguson (Ilsa) owns the movie and I hope she doesn't become another one-and-done Mission Impossible leading lady.

I've yet to try it but I know people who have and most agree that the experience depends on the movie. A lot of people loved San Andreas in 4DX.

After seeing it a third time because my dad wanted to see it. This is my movie of the year so far. Plot, characters, villain, stunts, direction, pacing, performances by Cruise, Fergusson and Peg were all great. This time around I saw it on a normal screen instead of 4dx and I still had fun watching it.

Comedy was good too but I have to highlight Lane as the villain. Very creepy and so smart.

Saw it last Saturday with the GF - excellent action movie; really hasn't been a bad Mission Impossible movie yet and I'd say this is #1 or 2 on my list. Great casting; really like the additions of Rebecca Ferguson and Alec Baldwin. Don't have enough superlatives for Tom Cruise; him doing so many of his own stunts really adds to the overall immersion and enjoyment of the action scenes.
