Computer Experts: Questions about Overclocking/Gaming Rig building, etc.

    Hey guys,

So in August of 2013 I built this rig...

    My Rig Specs
    CPU: Intel I5-4670K 3.4 GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX LGA 1150 Motherboard
    Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 Series 120GB 2.5” Solid State Drive
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5” 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 760 2GB Windforce Video Card
Case: Cooler Master Storm Scout 2 Advanced ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair Enthusiast 850W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B3ST/BLK/G/AS DVD/CD Writer
    Operating System: Windows 7 64bit
Monitor: BenQ VA GW2750HM 27-Inch Screen LED-lit Monitor

I have a few questions that some of you computer gurus might help me with....

    1. If you had this rig as of today, what would be the first thing you would upgrade/replace?
    2. Is it worth upgrading my GTx 760 GPU to a GTX 970?
    3. Overclocking...should I do it? Is it worth it with this rig build?

I play mostly Total War games, ARMA 3, and various Flight Sims(Il-2 Sturmovik series, Rise of Flight, etc.) This rig handles just about all of those very very well but, as with anyone, I'm always looking for advice on updating, etc.

    Thanks in advance.

Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

    1. GPU. I don't see anything else I would even consider touching to upgrade right now.
    2. It's definitely a significant upgrade. Just depends on if the money is worth it.
    3. I have the 7870 which according to the Tom's Hardware Hierarchy Chart are comparable. I wouldn't mind a better GPU, but I am playing GTA V on high/very high settings at 60 FPS no problem. I'm not familiar with those games, but they don't seem like graphical powerhouses.

You can answer a question for me now

I've been wanting to get back into playing flight simulators. I played MS Flight Simulator 2002 way back in the day. What flight simulator should I go with if I want to fly little planes and commercial jets (not fighter).

      Thanks.

I just pulled the trigger on the MSI 970 on Amazon. 348.00 PLUS I get Batman Arkham Knight and Witcher for FREE w/ it.

I don't know any non military flight sims. I strictly fly military sims.

I would definitely upgrade the GPU. Overclocking the CPU will work wonders for ARMA 3 since ARMA series really rely on the speed of your CPU and not so much how many cores. I over clocked my 5820K from 3.3 to 4.1 and got a 15 FPS increase in Arma 3 on Ultra settings.

Hold off on the cpu as Skylake should be out in a few months and I think you need a 1151 board, so that would be a major upgrade/cost.
