This laptop is a few years old to say the least and is operating with Windows Vista (YUCK!). Can someone explain to an ignorant, technologically inclined person how in the world to upgrade this thing?

    Thank you in advance.
You won't be able to upgrade for free from Vista to Win10. The offer was only extended to machines running Win7 or 8.1.

Sweet! My job is done!!! LOL

I'm going to text her and tell her this information and let her figure it out from here.

Thanks man! Now I can relax and enjoy my Sunday.

Pretty nice info for those who want their plain old Win7 start menu back:

If people are getting sick of waiting just google "windows 10 download" then use the link that says "download windows 10 ISO" takes you right to microsofts download and you can just install it on the system instead of creating a disk. Done this on 2 laptops already and it worked fine.

I'm still on reserve. ...Win7 has been fine for me so no rush.

Appreciate the feedback people are giving back.

I agree, 7 is fine for me and where i'll stay, but one thing i've noticed is typical of what I expected of a "troubled launch". I'm glad several people are liking 10 but is far far from proven it will replace the solid win 7!

                  Re: Windows 10

Seen a lot of tweets reminding people that the performance gains they're seeing while gaming aren't DirectX12, but rather just less OS overhead compared to 7/8. Surprised more don't realize that, games need to be made specifically for 12, and when they do we should see significant improvements over older titles.

Looks like there are nice gains to be had depending on your setup though:

Windows 7 vs Windows 10 initial performance testing: 7% boost with GTX 960 with Shadow of Mordor, 22% boost with GTX 960 on Arkham Orgins.

I would advise not upgrading to W10 right away. Let them work out the kinks first. I am a professional remote support (freelance) techie for Windows Operating Systems, I honestly know my stuff very well.

I have advised everyone I know that since Windows 7 will receive Windows Updates until Jan 2020, there is no rush to get into a new operating system from Microsoft.

IMHO, Microsoft is doing such a huge advertising campaign this time around they are making Windows users feel compelled to upgrade to Windows 10, just because it''s free. I have to install all new operating systems from Microsoft for consumers because I need to know how to repair, tweak and optimize the systems. I installed the W10 upgrade and was not impressed with the final version. To be candid, it''s still much easier for the average computer user to navigate Windows 7.

In a few words: Windows 10 has too much junk in it in terms of the Start Menu/All Programs. Windows 7 has those two featues in excellently configured and everyone loves a helpful Start Button.

I also believe Windows 7 to be the flagship Operating System from Microsoft since Windows XP.

Last but not least, the old adage: "if it ain''t broken, don''t fix it."
Thanks for the info. I'm waiting things out a bit, but I noticed having more problems with my Win7 laptop loading programs, loading in general, doing anything with a couple of programs opening right around the time they started offering Win10.

The conspiracy theory in me thinks this is a bit intentional, and, just in case, I was going to eventually go to Win10 to see if that would help. What are the chances my thought here is right? And if I'm wrong, what are the chances Win10 struggles even more as I just need to replace the laptop?

Try doing maintenance on it to clean out all the excess files, defrag and all of that?

I do it occassionally just to try to avoid those kinds of issues often

Upgraded my Computer to a 1TB drive and was able to install Win 10. Like it so far but was trying out the Cortana feature and I can't hear her talking...can here other things on my computer though. Can see the pulsing circle which I assume means she's talking.

I'm liking it, but the glitch where you have to manually open the Playback Devices box to switch back and forth from speakers to headphones is so *** **** annoying.

I'm having similar issues with that too (headphones are default communication device, but keep getting muted) I think my audio software has presets that until now I haven't had to use that I'm going to tinker with this weekend. Pretty sure I can load audio profiles with just 1/button press, surely there's some freeware out there that does the same.

Got it working...I deleted my sound card drivers and rebooted my comp so it could download new ones.

Wondering though is there a way to have Cortana go to certain sites? That would really be nice. I have it set for Hey Cortana..then would be nice to say go to so and so site and it opens it up.

I can't seem to rename a favorites folder from the Edge Hub. I right click, then hit rename, type the corrected entry, but it always goes to the original.
