My small impressions from the first one are here:
Talk about opening a horror movie right on the first shot! It never really drops off from there as far as a movie standpoint, but I wish the overall payoff was a bit greater. However, not too many horror films in recent memory keep a serious, dark, consistent tone anymore. This one was able to do that and not have to become too "Hollywood," or whatever it is one would say about it. It was a bit cryptic like The Ring, which to me is always a good thing. Jump scares were effective for being few and far between, but the moments themselves were often sub-par. It was a film that relied more on its creepy atmosphere than build-ups or jump-scares, which I appreciated. But as I implied, its strength was in its best portions, and its worst portions could have been more strengthened. Good to see Ethan Hawke on screen again; he carries solitary scenes pretty well.
Didn't ever really hear impressions from the masses here on this film. Anybody else down for a horror film that are maybe skipping out on The Gallows like I am?
