Languages I've used over the years? C++, C#, Java, VB, PHP, Python, MATLAB, Fortran, SAS, and I write a lot of T-SQL.
My job is lead developer and I'm working on converting are aging compensation and reporting front ends from a VB.NET web site to a C#/MVC web application and normalizing our SQL databases. -

I've been concentrating on PHP, JavaScript and R while going back to school for an associate's in computer information technology. Any advice? I know both Khan Academy and Code academy have phenomenal and free resources for self teaching yourself too code.Jacksonville Jaguars

Re: Computer Programming?
I have a Computer Engineering degree from Michigan. I'm a Web Developer (senior level) currently doing .NET C# sites, lately using different CMS platforms based on what the clients need.
In the past I've done PHP, Drupal, mysql stuff, all that.
If you want to get into the Web area I'd take a look at responsive web design. I can also cut up a design and using CSS/Javascript/HTML turn it into the website (both front end and back end, though I'm stronger in back end development).Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

I'm a Sr. Software Architect for a company on the west coast (I live on the east coast so I work from home. Not a bad deal). Right now, I'm doing a lot of C#, SQL Server, and MongoDB. I got started with PHP, and Perl in the late 90s.Comment

Re: Computer Programming?
I just kind of started doing stuff when I was a kid and it always came easy. I guess it'd kind of depend what you want to do with IT. I haven't ever done much with either of those academies (but probably should because meetings at work take away any time I have to actually, you know, learn/work on code). I've always been the type to get a book, and I wish they were cheaper, and kind of start that way, then for web at least, try things you see online, whether it is to mimic features on a web site or practice code. For software, it's a bit harder, and since my group stays away from software (too many hoops and restrictions for production), I don't do much with it any more so can't offer much there.
If you like back-end, I'd look at some database admin books, learn the ins and outs of building, supporting, and enhancing databases. That's one thing I don't like about my job is there is too much separation. At least for one of our sites I am the defacto DBA and modeler as well as developer so I get to work with that a bit, but it's pretty small compared to our other application.Last edited by Redacted01; 08-12-2015, 06:44 PM.Comment
