Turning my 2nd HDD into a bootable XP OS?
Wonder if someone could point me in the right direction on this. My secondary HDD is just basically a data backup drive. I also have and external 1TB HDD to which I could transfer this information (as this secondary HDD is only a 150 GBs). I want to wipe it and load XP on it. My primary OS is W7 64-bit.

You could also make a Virtual Machine of XP in Windows 7 as well...XBL & PSN: zasbury25 -
Re: Turning my 2nd HDD into a bootable XP OS?
That seems daunting. I don't want to partition my HDD. I'm wondering if I wipe and then format my 2nd HDD, to where I want to install XP, then change my boot order to start with my 2nd HDD, have the XP install disc there, would it then start the install process.... just as if I was installing a new OS on my PC.
P.S. I think from what I'm reading, I need to unplug my main HDD after shutting down. And then boot to the 2ndary HDD as if I'm installing a whole new OS (which essentially I am). The boot order will then be the issue, I suppose.Last edited by daflyboys; 09-20-2015, 11:12 AM.Comment

If you don't want to mess with the MBR, you could also select the device you want to boot from when your machine starts up (possibly F12) and choose it that way.XBL & PSN: zasbury25Comment

Re: Turning my 2nd HDD into a bootable XP OS?
Ok, so essentially I could:
1. Wipe my 2nd HDD (to where I'm going to install XP)
2. Reset my boot order in BIOS to that drive booting before my main drive (for now). Actually my CD drive is first, so it should recognize my XP disc if in tray and then ask to which location I want to install it.
OR 3. Have my XP install disc in tray and boot up.
4. PC should boot to my 2nd drive first and prompt for XP install.
5. Install XP (with bells and whistles).
6. Upon PC restart, PC should ask which OS I want to use??Comment

If your CD drive is ahead of your HDDs in boot order, stick the disk in and it will boot from the XP CD and will send you to the install menu. Or if your HDDs are set to boot first, enter your boot menu (sometimes F12) and choose your CD drive to boot...there is no need to get into the BIOS and keep changing your boot order, unless you really want to change it. From there, you are going to have to initiate the install process and tell it what drive (volume) you want XP to be installed on (and you can format your drive here, too).
After XP is installed on the secondary drive and if you don't edit your MBR, the computer will not stop and ask which OS you want to boot...you are going to have to press a specific key at startup and enter your computer's Boot Menu to override your BIOS boot order if you want to boot to the secondary drive, or any other detected device. If you edit your MBR like in the link above, the Windows Boot Manager will stop and ask.XBL & PSN: zasbury25Comment
