The new PlayOn 4.0 ~~ Initially disappointing

I know I've made several thread here in the past especially alerting folks here about PlayOn sales. However, I cannot promote this product any longer since this most recent update. Since the update to 4.0+, this thing has become a most incredible system hog. I bought the additional $5 HD feature and now my system all of a sudden supposedly can't handle it (despite PlayOn's system test saying I can). Further my WD TV box no longer holds it as a media source whereas previously it worked almost flawlessly. We'll see how the tech support ticket goes, but at this point I can no longer recommend this product until the fixes (if it happens) are in.

I just never cared for it. It never worked. I have the server running on occasion, if I'm desperate because Plex isn't acting right, or Hulu - but even then, it has let me down.

I plan on using it for the History Channel so I can watch my Curse of Oak Island - but not too optimistic about it.

With Plex and the Unsupported Apps on the Roku starting to wind down in support - PlayOn should definitely be stepping their game up at this time. I hope they do.

I think this was the attempt to step it up, but they are seriously trippin' (get it?).

If I had the money, I would do Raspberry Pi 2 + KODI on every TV. It just doesn't do Netflix as well (since it's essentially a Linux OS).

That was my question, couldn't you just use KODI instead. I sideloaded KODI onto a Fire Stick. Works pretty well.

PlayOn's best attraction for me was the sports content one could get. KODI is getting there but hasn't matched it as of yet. Also, KODI has no Netflix integration (though did apparently at one point). The device I use with PlayOn (WD TV Live Hub) has a separate Netflix plug-in, so you got the best of both worlds. And presently I just don't have the money to be buying any new hardware.

Well, after hunting around, it turns out that this could be partially tied to the maximum memory adjustment I made at some earlier point. I put that value back down to zero and it seems to help PlayOn somewhat, though I'm still not totally satisfied with the performance overall. Granted this isn't the youngest PC in the world and I could stand to have an upgrade, especially regarding processor speed. But since doing that tweak, PlayOn seems to at least be functioning pretty well again and my WD TV box can now access it as before.

So, I guess if you have a fast and powerful enough rig, you should be okay. It's good and worth it for a few of the 3rd party plugins that still work on it.

Finally got a response from tech support (3-ish days later). They blamed the HD thing on my PC trying to "catch up" to the stream. Nuh-uh. I played a non-HD stream in the evening and then it was shut down throughout the night into the next morning. I woke up to have my PC using 100% again. Also, the multiple processes of their server even when I'm not using it has me wondering if their using my PC for a bot or not (forgive my rapping).

Ugh. Not looking forward to dealing with that but PlayOn has the History channel so I can watch my Curse of Oak Island!
