Is it worth getting a 4K TV?

Long story short, we have just about finished renovating our house...

The 'new' place will have a home theatre room and I will buy a new TV for it.

Every shop I have looked at this week has 4K models everywhere. They look fantastic, but are all just running trailers etc.

I mainly want a new TV for gaming and blu ray....seems like neither will be available in 4K any time soon. Gaming likely not at all until the PS5 etc.

So, is it worth getting one?

Because of the flood of 4K TVs, yoy can get a 60 inch 1080p really cheap nowadays. Should I just roll with that? I can give it to my son in a couple of years time if I buy a 4K tv later.

Or is 4K going to be necessary really soon? Any and all opinions appreciated

If its in your price range, you should get one. I have two in my house and the only 4k content I watch is Netflix and some of the videos on Youtube. The reason I say get it is because if 4k content becomes more prevelant, you will already be future proofed for a while.

Now if its not already in your price range, dont get one. Like I said, there isnt a ton of content out there right now.

I can afford one...it is more a matter of whether it is worth it etc.

Re 'future proof'...i am kind of worried about that. For example, the first 1080p TVs were all supposedly future proof, but few actually were. HDMI and usb ports quickly made the first 1080p TVs redundant.

I guess I am worried about getting a 4K tv....only to see them blown out of the water by something better in two years etc. Having said that, they do seem much better future proofed nowadays. Tons of ports etc.

May I ask you which brand you got? I have been looking at the samsung 4K curved 65 inch tvs.

You need to do some research on the future proofing because it is all over the place right now with 4k. If the 1080p is cheap and great quality, you may not care about the lesser quality or 4k stuff.

I haven't looked into the 4k stuff much, but I believe you will want a set that does HDR, HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2, maybe quantum dots.

The confusing one for me is that half the 4k televisions do UHD TV....but the newer ones do SUHD TV, which according to the sales reps is 'much' better than 'regular 4K'.

I thought SUHD was just Samsung's version of UHD.

My opinion on 4k is if it's affordable now, it'll be cheap by the time there is plenty of content that actually shows up on it. They won't get more expensive with time. Why buy one now just to say you have it if you won't really get any use out of it for another 2 or 3 years, when you could get the same thing you want now for less, or something better for the similar price to now?

In resolution yes, quality no. They have a wider color range and use quantum dots or whatever Samsung calls it to produce more colors than UHD.

OLED should hopefully become standard in 2-3 years so that will probably be my next TV purchase.

Re: Is it worth getting a 4K TV?

I don't think it's worth dipping into 4K yet. Sure there is some limited content available through streaming, but for someone like me who has invested thousands of dollars into Blu-ray discs, I think the only way I could make the switch is by going all in. On the panel front, that does mean getting an OLED, and hoping that someday they make a superb one that is 70+ inches. Otherwise, I'll wait for the right 4K projector. Even then, I won't do it unless it has a great upscaler and/or there is a fantastic return program for BD's to upgrade to 4K BD's. I just don't think it's worth the ROI at screen sizes below that, given how much money would have to be spent for it.

I'm not saying 4K is going to flop, but UHD is not the upgrade that HD was for our home screen sizes. This is especially true when they won't be broadcasting live TV in 2160p, much less 1080p.

Now, all this being said, it's the flagship televisions that will be the better technology as a whole anyway, so when it comes to upgrading your TV in the next few years, you'll really almost have no choice but to go 4K. Though in that case, you'll have to decide whether you're trying to go for the 4K content or not. If you are, as I said, I would truly have to go all in for a $20,000+ investment for all of the content around it, including the TV itself. In which case, I'll have to see how it pans out... and I'm willing to wait for the massive price drops in the year 2020 if it means I have to.

As someone who is only a fan of plasma, I can't see myself ever going to LED. No matter what, the motion alone would make it a downgrade, no matter what the resolution says. OLED or bust hereon out. I'll wait to see what Samsung does with it in the future.

I would wait, mainly for 2 things. UHD blu ray discs for some content and high dynamic range color spectrum.

Like somebody else mentioned if you do decide to get a 4K set now make sure it has HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 at a minimum.

                      What is your budget?

Is your internet fast enough to handle 4K from a source like Netflix. They need 25 Mbps for 4K. Even then it's limited options.

You mentioned OLED above. Would you upgrade to that once it becomes the new standard?
