LOL such a different look. I don't know if it's going from Abrams to Lin, or just a narrower focus or something, but it certainly didn't tickle me the same way the first two did. Not saying I won't see it... just totally didn't expect that kind of trailer was all haha.

Something tells me a "Trailer #2" will make this film look much better than this trailer just did, though.

I don't know....just looked fun. New enemy. I would like to see if they're possibly going to bring in a pre-Borg looking enemy. I think that would be cool.

          The first two weren't fun?

And I didn't say it didn't look fun, it just didn't look like Star Trek. It legit looked like Fast & Furious: Space. I couldn't wrap my head around it. Maybe the Beastie Boys track threw me off (yes, I know it was in the 2009 Star Trek film), or the random motorcycle jump, or the one-liners, or the Enterprise being destroyed, or something... just looked different, and I wasn't expecting it. As I said, I bet a new trailer will show me exactly what I'm looking for where I say, "Yes, that's the flick right there!"

Trust me when I say I'm not hoping for a geeky sci-fi kind of film, either. I'm no Trekkie. I was very, very skeptical of watching the 2009 film for that very reason; I didn't want it to be something I just wouldn't enjoy. I was wrong, and Abrams hit the tone just right for me. Him being absent from this production (besides probably poking his head in) makes me more excited for The Force Awakens right now, and yesteryear this notion could not have gone farther in the other direction. You know I'll be seeing this one in theaters though, unless reviews are down the toilet.

EDIT: Just saw the YouTube page (ratings, comments). A lot of people seem to be up in arms.

This is what I feared in the back of my mind when they rebooted Star Trek. The first two films were definitely more action oriented but because the first film established the new timeline and the 2nd was basically a re-imagining of Wrath of Khan it didn't bother me nearly as much. Now though, they have a totally original story in this setting and it looks far too "action movie" for my tastes. Look, i'm not asking for a cerebral film but Trek has always had something with a message and at least throws a little parable or lesson hidden in the narrative.

I just don't get that vibe from this trailer. I'd have no problem if this was some made up sci-fi film but this is Star Trek! We'll see how the 2nd trailer depicts this film.

Yeah, it's one of the reasons I avoided the first two reboot films for as long as I did. Those movies are fun, but when you enjoyed the original series and movies, and especially TNG series, this doesn't feel particularly true to all that.

But this is how franchise movies have to presented these days to reach the biggest audience. Heavy on the action and effects.

I really hope Into Darkness wasn't the re-imagined Wrath of Khan....I had been under the impression it was setting up a real Wrath of Khan in the fourth or fifth film of the new series.

I think we've had enough Khan for one lifetime. Pre-Borg would be cool or a bit more full out vs. Romulans or Klingons or both movie.

It pretty much seemed like it to me and others. The beats were pretty similar and the ending was a pretty blatant callback to WOK.

This style of Trek works for the cinema, I'll hopefully get my old school Trek fix from the new TV series that is coming out in a couple of years.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

I had heard that after into darkness it would be a Kingon/Romulan story and then they would tie a real wrath of khan (recycling a theme of khans crew dying, but now when he tried to bring them out of cryo instead of people being marooned) into a Borg cross-story in a fourth film.

I guess I shouldn't listen to Hollywood gossip tho. I'm one wo believes you can never have too much Khan.

Either way, I was worried when I found out there was a different director. I agree the trailer looks like Fast 8: Outer Space Bro, but obviously that might not end up being the case at all. It still looks fun, which is great, and new characters/new directions shouldn't be frowned upon at first glance I admit

If it makes you guys feel better, Simon Pegg (Scotty and co-writer of this movie's screenplay) doesn't like the trailer either because he doesn't think it represents what the film actually is:

“It was very action packed, I didn’t…uh…yeah…it was surprising. I find it to be the marketing people saying, ‘everybody come and see this film, it’s full of action and fun,’ when there’s a lot more to it than that. I didn’t love it, because I know there’s a lot more to the film.”

                              ...

“There’s a lot more story and a lot more character stuff and a lot more what I would call ‘Star Trek stuff.’ But, you know, they’ve got to bring a big audience in, they’ve got to bang the drum, so to the Star Trek fans, I’d say hang in there, be patient.”
