And hell, as amazing as the Purple Rain album was (it was amazing), it's forgotten that it was a movie about his life... amazing movie too. The symbol thumbed his nose at the establishment and was a trailblazer in so many ways.

Plus I hear he could really hoop and make pancakes.

    This one definitely stings. RIP
Game, blouses. LOL. Still one of the funniest skits of all-time. Gets me every time.

I wrote this about Purple Rain on here about two years ago:

"It had been a while since I had watched this from start to finish, so popped it in last night and came away with a much different feeling than previous viewings. The first half of the film is a lot of 1980's cheese but then really takes a turn - a dark one in that - in the second half, and man, those last 45-50 minutes are really good.

I understand this movie was purely a vehicle for Prince, but the story of the parents' relationship and how it influenced and affected The Kid (Prince) is something I wish would've been further explored.

Still, the ending is great as The Kid learns a truth about his father through a tragic moment, and with all of those emotions, coupled with all of the other issues he is dealing with, lead to him creating a magnificent song. I like that inside look into the creative process of what inspires a song.

Even if you don't care for the story, the movie is worth a watch for the music (amazing songs), Morris Day (scene stealer and he's got 2 catchy songs, too) and Appolonia, who is very easy on the eyes."

Re: Prince reported dead at 57.

I saw him on the Purple Rain tour at the Cow Palace and a few years back at The Forum. Apart from the setlist, you wouldn't have known he'd aged a day in that time.

Prince did a lot for suburban kids like myself who (at the time) thought that funk and R&B wasn't cool or interesting. He opened a lot of eyes and minds, probably more than he will ever receive credit for.

It still isn't quite sinking in as true. Unbelievably sad.

              RIP Prince.

So many musicians, when they find a formula that works, just regenerate it over and over and over again. But Prince was always reinventing himself and pushing himself. Aside from his obvious talent, that's something I'll always respect about him.

Nah kudos goes to MTV for their coverage. I read on Twitter earlier that they stopped their repeats mid show (with like 5 minutes left but who's counting). And started playing Prince music videos. Don't know if they are still doing this but I commend them for doing that.

It's hard to express how universally loved Prince is here. When a person from Minnesota makes it and chooses to stay when they can go literally anywhere else - he will live in people's hearts forever.

I just got back from Enger Tower, a park overlooking Duluth and the lake. The Tower is lit purple in his honor tonight, and there were a couple hundred others there paying their respects and reflecting even though it's foggy, rainy, and cold. The atmosphere was actually quite fitting. As I was leaving there was still a line of cars arriving.

                                RIP Prince.
