Re: Star Trek TV Series (2017)
Just saying, it's crazy how possibly one of the nerdiest things in the world decades ago might become one of the most popular things in the world now.
The movies are different, but we'll see what the show brings fan-wise, because you know this thing will be nerdy if they want to attract die-hard Trekkies of old (but well budgeted).Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60 -
Re: Star Trek TV Series (2017)
I grew up watching Star Trek The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise. I still watch them year round every day on Netflix. That franchise series broke a lot of barriers in television in the 1980s and 1990s that the under 30 crowd take for granted now.
I just hope they stick to the Star Trek roots and don't do it like they do the modern Star Trek movies which to me I think are awful. But then again I am bias because I grew up watching it and reading the books. So I am use to things being done a certain way.Comment

Re: Star Trek TV Series (2017)
Voyager to me fell off around Season 4 or 5 but it was still interesting.
Anywho, I to, hope this will hew more towards the TV series rather than being an action oriented series. You got to leave a little something for those of us who grew up watching Trek.

Re: Star Trek TV Series (2017)
The franchise lost me with Enterprise, but I'll give this a shot. Trailer to me feels like a step above fan made.
Then again, Star Trek fan productions have set a pretty high bar...

I'll check out this new series for sure but if it's focus is on action then they will lose me. That's not what Star Trek is, or should be, about IMO.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Star Trek TV Series (2017)
I saw the trailer to the new show the other day and i'm with the consensus. Star Trek is a cerebral concept with dashes of action. Heck, most of the action before the JJ movies was often laughed at because Trek never did action all that well. That didn't matter because the stories and using the issues of the day as a way to bring about said stories was its strong suit. There's a reason why people still find new things to talk about each of the Trek series 50+ years after TOS came on the air.
This show looks a little too action oriented for my tastes but I do like that the main lead characters are women. That being said, some of the sets and cinematography looks too flashy to me. I also didn't like the fact that the very first PR photo was basically a rip off of Star Wars what with the desert attire and all that.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Star Trek TV Series (2017)
I would hope with lower budget they'd be forced to focus on character and story (a la ST:TNG), but that trailer reminds me a bit of those syndicated sci-fi shows you'd see on weekday afternoons in the late 1990s. Stargate SG1, etc. Like they're trying to have it both ways, with low budget but still relying on visual effects. They'd be better off spending all the budget on getting the best actors, and having simple sets/concepts.Last edited by dubcity; 05-19-2017, 07:15 PM.Comment

Re: Star Trek TV Series (2017)
The premiere wasn't good. Don't like the ships designs. The dialogue was way too modern. I feel this will be flop of a series, especially considering they having it on CBS All Access. Nothing about the premiere screamed oh man I need to pay $10 a month for I can continue to watch this show. And the amount of commercials they showed, is just CRAZY.
I was hoping this series stuck to it's roots. Instead it is just like the modern movies.Comment

I'm not not exactly jumping up and down over how they've treated the Klingons here as an analogue to radical Islam however it does fit in with how Trek has always adapted to lift a mirror up to society through it's sci-fi storytelling. The relationship between Burnham and Sarek is an interesting one.SpoilerI have to wonder if perhaps she and Sarek were involved romantically even though it's not logical. There definitely seems to be more than a mere ward relationship here especially considering how a part of him is in her to the point that he can connect to her on a mind meld level millions of miles away.
There is some characterization in here that has some meat to it rather than how the movies have treated the classic Trek characters. I really enjoyed the overly cautious science officer. Even though i'm not completely comfortable with the Klingons as Islamicists parallel here I found the way they've used this iteration of the Klingon warrior culture to be full of story potential especially after the way the 2nd episode ended.
We are now in a situation where a pacifist and exploratory body in the Federation are now hip deep in a hot war not of their choosing. I think we may see some of that need for peace bumping up against the reality of war. There will definitely be a lot of moral dilemmas to be explored.
I have to credit Nicholas Meyer who is an old hand at Trek (at least the original cast movies) for being able to reign in the action aspect. This isn't going to be traditional Trek as this looks to be a very plot driven cinematic show. One of the people behind the scenes has likened this to a 15 hour movie.
All in all, I enjoyed this immensely and will be watching weekly. I honestly think CBS should've found a way to put this on cable at the very least rather than using it as a showcase for a new OTT app.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
