Transformers: The Last Knight (June 23, 2017)

Filming for the fifth movie in the franchise is currently underway. Michael Bay returns in the director's chair with Mark Wahlberg's story line. Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson are also returning after taking Age of Extinction off.

Here is a photo Bay tweeted on July 4th:

    Spoiler

If they keep making them, I'll keep seeing them... more or less with some disappointment along the way, but something keeps me and tens of millions of others coming back.

Also news of a Bumblebee spin-off in 2018 and Transformers 6 in 2019.

The three-headed dragon flying over the Cliffs of Moher was cool.

Other than that, another Transformers movie. Not much else to it.

I wish I'd have more confidence in the film makers to make that plot point good but yeah, this is Bayformers no way it's gonna be as good as one would hope. (Yes I know Bay isn't directing anymore)

I don't want to create a new thread but well....Apparently Bayformers are going to be a thing for quite some time. Apparently they have FOURTEEN stories in the hopper right now. Thankfully Bay won't be involved in all of this craziness.

And the official release date of this film is now June 21st (my birthday).

Re: Transformers: The Last Knight (June 23, 2017)

                      I saw this earlier tonight.

Wow, Michael Bay sure knows how to make... a mess. That's not speaking on how much I liked or disliked the film, but rather it's a comment on how scrapped together this film is. All of them are like this, but this one much more so, especially in the first half. The second half lends to more consistency within the story, but some shots become incoherent time to time.

I'll start off with what I liked. First and foremost, the effects. Holy cow. Yes, the transformers themselves leave a lot to be desired when they're talking with each other and such, but the visual effects as a whole (especially the final act) are mindblowingly outstanding. I didn't even see it in 3D, but they are simply top-notch. Another good thing is since the first film you finally get some distinguishable transformer characters, especially when in combat. The last few films really didn't give you that. Speaking of characters, I was fond of what Anthony Hopkins brought to the table. He actually looked like he was having fun out there, alongside Mark Wahlberg and crew. Bay's humor also insertions didn't fall as flat to me this time around. They're corny as hell moments, but they actually made me laugh. Lastly, there seem to be higher stakes again for the first time since TF1. Now there is an internal struggle involving Optimus, which really makes you feel that the absolute worst can happen. This is also true because this is Bay's last film he is said to be directing, so this really has a feel of "this is the end" around all of it.

Now, with the negatives. Like all of the films, it loses its focus time to time. I don't mind long movies at all, but I know that if every TF movie was reduced to a focused two hours in length that many people would actually appreciate these films a heck of a lot more. Secondly, Bay plays too loosely with his direction that it seems every shot needs to have some sort of ecstatic glamour to it, filled with music in the background and such. You could say it's the film's relentless heartbeat, but it never seems to take a break... until a certain point in the film when we need to be provided with lots of expository dialogue. Also there seems to be a whole new level to the human elements regarding action scenes and whatnot. I'm fine with suspending disbelief in them, but they aren't as consistent with the previous films. Finally, since Ironhide, Jazz, and Ratchet have been killed off in the earlier TF films, the new autobots outside of Bumblebee and Optimus Prime have been terrible. Their scenes when they talk are just god awful.

For once though, this one doesn't really feel like the others. You don't sit around waiting for a final showdown in a downtown area or anything like that. The final act gives a lot more intimacy, feel, and weight to the fights. It was a pretty epic showdown, if for no other reason than the visual and sound going through it. Ah yes, the sound... I don't know if I'll ever get this one on Blu-ray, but if you have a subwoofer that you're proud of, holy cow this film will work it out when it comes to home video!

I can't say that I recommend this film fully, really. It truly is a mess of a work when all is said and done. Just a bunch of noise, even when metal isn't clashing and sparks aren't flying. But it certainly ended stronger than it began, and is a step above TF2 and TF4. If somebody asked me which TF films they should see, I could honestly only recommend the first one to them. Otherwise, I could try and go for a 1-3-5 combo, but 5 plays off 4 a little bit because of Mark's character (and Optimus's whereabouts, I suppose), though it could be skipped or summed up pretty quickly. Either way, I just don't see the OS crowd needing to rush out to see this one, but it certainly is demo material.

Actually, one last thing to say on that... the shifting aspect ratios were very noticeable, bothersome, and somewhat made me curious what and when he decided to shoot on IMAX and when not to. It will shift within the same scene from another shot in the same conversation. It was very bizarre.

It reached around $258M million at the box office internationally last weekend. Yea that's why they keep making these films.

I'd never seen one of these in theaters, in fact I've only seen 1 and part of 2 at all, but dear god, I felt every second of that 2 and a half hours watching this. I don't know why, it just felt neverending.

It's so strange, the first movie is one of the only movies I've seen at the theater twice, however for the sequel (Revenge of the Fallen), it's also one of the only movie i was looking at my watching wondering when it was going to end. It felt like it went on for hours and hours. It still get a me, Shia's character had to travel a football field in length to get to Optimus and that took an hour of realtime for that scene!!!! What the neck.

With all that being said, I sort of want to see this one even though it looks like more of the same. I've seen them all, and even sort of liked the 3rd one "Dark of the Moon." I love Mark Walhberg but his character is terrible.

Hopefully with Bay no longer attached to the series, we can get a true reboot or even a soft reboot. The one thing I truly want to change is the desgin of the transformers, they all look too much alike beyond Prime and Bumble bee.

Who ever takes the reign next movie, I truly hope they go back to the drawing board.

It may be just me, but I'd prefer the robots to have more obvious recognizable parts for what they transform into. It's a bit old school, making them look more clunky in robot form, but that was a large part of the fun of it for me when transformers first came out. I feel like the movies have gone farther and farther away from that, and it now just looks like fighting giant robots... very well done but still, not transformers.
