Re: The Walking Dead (Season 7)
I got so fed up with TWD that I gave up at the end of Season 5 and skipped Season 6 entirely, until about a week ago when I was bored and decided to Netflix it on a whim. Even though I knew how the season ended, it still felt more enjoyable than the other recent seasons, and JDM as Negan is a tour de force that will keep me reeled in.
I've spent a ton of time trying to pinpoint what exactly the issue is with the show. In my mind I've narrowed it down to two things:
1. The acting. I echo Money's sentiments about Andrew Lincoln; he just comes off as corny and cheap much of the time. I thought he was amazing on Sunday night, but that's the point - it was a point of emphasis that his performance stood out. Episodes where the lead actor gives an A+ performance were commonplace for Jon Hamm, Bryan Cranston, James Gandolfini, etc. Lincoln simply isn't on that level, and being that it's "his" story with Rick as the focus of the entire show, that drags the show down.
That's not even factoring in the often-mediocre acting from other mainstays on the show.
2. The very nature of the show. The essence of a show about a zombie apocalypse commands the consistent turnover of characters, which means losing talented actors, but I think it also prevents many viewers from investing too heavily. Yes, TWD has legions upon legions of insane people who love the show (there was seriously some huge petition after the S6 finale to DEMAND AMC tell them who Negan killed? Seriously?). But many people also know that they can't get too attached to any one character. That's an issue other massively successful shows don't have.
2b. The nature of the show, 2.0. People love TV shows that have a clear and consistent storyline that is progressed forward, bit by bit. TWD has been disjointed because every season takes place somewhere different and with different circumstances (the writer turnover and complete botchjob at the end of Season 3 didn't help), and it's not clear what the "endgame" is. Obviously this is partly because the show is based on a comic that is still ongoing and has been for 13 years now, but it's also because of the essence of the show (and comic): it's an apocalypse. What "ending" could there be? They aren't going to suddenly stumble across some "cure" to the zombie outbreak and restore the world; it's already over. So where is this show going to end, exactly?
I'll put the next part in spoilers because it contains some comic book stuff that hasn't happened on the TV show yet.
SpoilerConsider Negan. His storyline (one could argue it's still ongoing) in the comics was "resolved" by Rick putting him in prison. For the TV series, after Sunday night, will anyone be satisfied if the Negan character is simply disarmed after losing the war and imprisoned? They would chase off huge portions of their fanbase. Maybe it's an American thing, I dunno. But after the events of Sunday night, the resolution to the Negan storyline, whenever it occurs, will have to involve a payoff in the form of a spectacular death scene.
TWD has driven me bonkers in the past with poor acting, slow and murky storylines, and downright nonsense at times (not the least of which was some sadistically pointless deaths). JDM has made it all worth it with his performance so far, so IMO the more airtime he gets this season, the better. Aside from that, I just accept it for what it is, an entertaining show that has some ugly warts.Comment

SpoilerI disagree, just because I became a huge Negan fan and keeping him alive in any aspect was an interesting story. Keeping him alive with the whisperers arc coming next and his interactions with them is completely necessary. Sooner or later Negan will die, both in the show and comics, I just can't see that anytime soon.Last edited by BDKiiing; 10-29-2016, 10:28 PM.St. Louis Cardinals | Milwaukee Bucks | Los Angeles Rams

Re: The Walking Dead (Season 7)
And I don't ask for any negative reasons against posters here, there have just been too many comic spoilers that have slipped over the years.
That and I never have watched the previews for the next week (not just for this show but for any show I watch).Comment

From the episode or from the "next episode preview?"

There are no spoilers at all in that image that was posted, the scene portrayed there is from Season 3. It's a recurring meme among TWD fans to use that image with Rick making a horrible joke while Carl stands there.Comment
