    John Saunders 1955-2016

His unexpected death at 61 was shocking news to his colleagues and me. I was at the gym on the treadmill watching First Take when Molly Querim interrupted the show to announce the news.

A more than able heir to The Sports Reporters' lead role after the sudden passing of Dick Schapp, his easy delivery reminded me a little of Pat Summerall.

    RIP John.

Just saw a video of Hannah Storm breaking the news on SportsCenter. That was tough to watch. No idea how she kept it together as much as she did considering they've worked together forever.

Definitely the most friendly face and voice in the industry. This was a tough one... really nice guy. RIP to a great man.

Wow this was completely out of left field

John Saunders was a giant in Canadian sports journalism and was someone that never forgot his roots unlike some that end up migrating to the US to pursue bigger dreams. He was also the very first TV voice of the Raptors and I would hope the Raptors would honor him in some small way this coming season.

R.I.P. thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

2016 sucks. Terrible loss. As an aspiring journalist I've always kept him in the highest regard.

I didn't even know he was sick. Was that public knowledge?

Not to my knowledge. On First Take a distraught Stephen A Smith said he was dealing with health issues.

Someone else said this, but I have to agree...Saunders never made the story about himself, he always let it speak for itself. He didn't create controversy...he just reported on the story and did his job. RIP.

He always came across as very genuine and very classy. He was never one of the larger personalities at ESPN, but that was probably a good thing. I always kind of thought him as part of ESPN's foundation, who probably went underappreciated.

                    RIP.

Apparently was diabetic and had many health issues for a long time.

I know he was an advocate for diabetes research-I think I read today where one of his children had childhood diabetes.
