Well I mean this thing with them going into the game and actually experiencing another reality physically, we are like hundreds of years away from being able to do that, really most things on this show are either impossible (stuff like transferring consciousness into other devices, etc) or we are hundreds or thousands of years away from being able to do that. most of the stuff is metaphors about "be careful what you wish for", or ultimately they are about the characters set in a world that differs from ours technologically and we, as the viewer are supposed to ask what we would do in that situation, as opposed to being scared of the technology. They could come up with hundred of more episodes.

In reality it wouldn't even make sense for a VR fighting game to even have genitals..you'd be like Ken and Barbie if you think about it.
I still like the premise though, even if it doesn't make any sense.

Yeah we don't have that technology now but that wasn't what I was saying.
We already accept that these things can happen and some are already happening. There isn't much to warn people about anymore. Technology is simply moving where we expect and there's not much we can do even if we think it's dangerous.
It isn't that we don't have the technology yet, it's that we already know we're moving toward that technology so the warnings aren't that alarming at all.
Two people being physically engaged in a fighting game seems highly plausible to me even if it's a thousand years away from happening.
Being able to rewind my life and pinpoint moments that someone lied to me was amazing. That's not the kind of thing you think is possible and may never be possible. Uploading someone's full consciousness onto the cloud is also something impossible. The idea of it, however, is scary. The things that could come with those scientific breakthroughs can be alarming if people aren't careful.
Thinking that I might want to have sex with Chun-Li doesn't really do much to make me concerned about the future of technology."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Black Mirror (Netflix series)
Huge fan of this series, have watched every episode.
With that being said. this last 3 episodes were pretty weak!
I didnt really like any of them at all.
And we are not thousands of years away from that kind of technology.
Look how far we have come in the last 100 years. You really think it is going to take thousands of years?ND Season Ticket Holder since '72.Comment

Re: Black Mirror (Netflix series)
My wife and I just got into this over the past week. We actually started with Season 5 and then proceeded to go through Season 1. We're now on Season 2, episode 3. I really liked season 5 as a whole, but again i really haven't watched much of the series yet so season 5 might just be retreading past seasons, i can't say yet.
Season 1 though, blew my mind. The 2nd episode of season 1 I found a tad boring but the premise made a lot of sense. Episode 1 of season 1 though, so far the best episode i've seen yet. It works on so many levels because it brings into question our own sense of what's right and what's wrong and how far are we willing to go for public perception at the cost of our own sanity. Episode 3 of season 1 featuring the new Doctor (Jodie Whitaker) was also another good episode. But like the first episode of the season, it was more about the human mind and behavior then just technology.
I feel like when the show is more focused on our interactions with one another because then focusing on technology, it's at it's best. So far season 2 hasn't impressed me yet. I've watched the first and second episode (found the 2nd episode pretty bland) and i haven't been impressed. I do hear the 4th episode of season 2 is very good.
So far the wife and I are really enjoying this.Comment

Re: Black Mirror (Netflix series)
San Junipero is, by far, my favorite episode of all of them and one that I've watched multiple times. I actually was emotionally impacted by that ep and I never usually get emotional about any show. There's a lot of things going on in that episode that really make you think.. Check it out!
We both were silent the whole episode. When it was over we both just stared at each other blown away by what we just watched.
We then watched it again, it really is one of the best things i have ever watched on TV.ND Season Ticket Holder since '72.Comment

So far the episode that really stuck out to me and left me dazed was "Shut up and Dance." The ending blew me away, disgusted and shocked me. Through out most of the episode i was rooting for the kid because it didn't seem like he did anything wrong. I was actually angry at him for allowing himself to be manipulated by these guys for doing what i thought a lot of people in this world do in their spare time. But that revelation hit me hard just because i was originally rooting for him only to be left disgusted.
In terms of pure awe, the first episode of season 1 "National Anthem", I still think was the best episode. I know a lot of people are disgusted by it, but it shows how sometimes a situation leaves you completely powerless and at the whelm of others. It's a powerful episode.
One extra one, the episode Playtest was entertaining just because i'm a avid gamer and the creator of the game reminded me a lot of Hideo Kojimo. I wasn't a fan of the ending of that episode, but everything else worked really well for me.
The Entire History of You, another really good episode.Comment

Loved Shut Up and Dance. Such a thrill ride and one of the most effed up episodes.
My favorites though are White Bear and White Christmas. Blown away on those episodes.

Re: Black Mirror (Netflix series)
It's great how everyone can have such different taste and appreciate of these episodes. I thought White Bear was terrible. I liked the concept and the revelation was definitely not something you could see coming but the way the episode went along, i just found it lacking.
I did like White Christmas a lot though.Last edited by marshallfever; 07-02-2019, 04:32 PM.Comment
