    The Matrix... Rebooted? (rumor)

‘Matrix’ Reboot Said to Be in the Works, With Keanu Reeves as a Maybe

LONDON — Fans of “The Matrix” may get another chance to see how deep the rabbit hole goes: A new installment in the film franchise is in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The prospects for a fourth movie were almost as ambiguous as the trilogy’s famously complex plot. An article published on Tuesday said that the siblings Lana and Lilly Wachowski, who dreamed up and shot the original “Matrix” and its sequels, were not yet involved in the possible project.

Nor was it clear how the narrative of the new installment, which The Hollywood Reporter described as a “relaunch” and a “reboot,” would tie in with the existing “Matrix” films.

The participation of Keanu Reeves, who played the central figure, Neo, in all three films, was also an open question. In February, Mr. Reeves said he would take part in another “Matrix” film if the opportunity arose and if the Wachowskis were involved. “I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not,” he told Yahoo Movies.

Zak Penn, co-creator of the television show “Alphas,” who has worked on screenplays for movies including “The Incredible Hulk,” “The Avengers” and “X-Men: The Last Stand,” was said by The Hollywood Reporter to be in talks to write the script.

The trilogy’s original producer, Joel Silver, first approached the Warner Brothers studio about the new sequel, according to the article.

The “Matrix” series centers on Neo, a Christlike figure who discovers that humanity is being kept in a placid dream state by machines and starts to fight back.

The first film became a sleeper hit after its release in 1999, bringing in close to half a billion dollars worldwide, winning four Academy Awards and leading to the sequels, “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions.”

The Wachowskis have tackled several ambitious projects since “The Matrix,” including “Sense8,” a Netflix series about people around the world linked by a mysterious psychic force, and a film adaptation of the sprawling fantasy novel “Cloud Atlas.”

A spokesman for Warner Bros. declined to comment on Wednesday.

If the Wachowskis don't come back, then I doubt Keanu comes back. He didn't initially want to return if they weren't a part of another sequel, at least. I also read another article that said Michael B. Jordan could be a potential lead for the reboot.

I'm hoping for more of a continuation of the original franchise's universe, though. Acknowledge the others even if they aren't there.

But alas, everything is rumored at this point. Easily fitting title though. That or "Relaunched," as another word they throw around in the article.

Shoulda stopped at 1 (sans the Superman flying ending). No need for this. But if Hollywood thinks it'll make a buck....then I'm sure they'll do it.

I agree. When I think of the Matrix I really only think about the first one, with exception of maybe a couple scenes from the sequels

I'm sure it will make a lot of money, like you said, and that's all that matters.

I'm not sure I see Keanu coming back

The original Matrix is a superb movie.

The two sequels were an abomination of nonsense and just really poorly written. Just so bad.

Agreed. IMO the lack of quality in the final two films just created more suspicion to the rumor that the Wachowski Bros. stole the original script idea from someone else. A remake would be another bad idea from Hollywood.

              Alphas was a great show...
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

The Matrix Resurrections releases tomorrow (in theaters and on HBO MAX), December 22nd.

It is currently sitting at 71% on Rotten Tomatoes with 116 reviews counted.

I'd gladly see this in theaters, but I wouldn't be able to for a couple of weeks. I think my first viewing will sadly have to be HBO MAX out of impatience, and I will likely proceed to a theatrical viewing thereafter (knocking on wood that it's good).

                    Re: The Matrix... Rebooted? (rumor)

                    Just finished.

Boy, I don't know what I was looking for in this movie, but this maybe wasn't it. This was very meta beyond belief, and perhaps to a parodying fault. I accept it the first time through, but it might be painstaking on re-watches. You can insert a wink here and there, but not peppering the entire movie with it. It doesn't bring about the kinds of lines that would get the audiences to erupt in cheers, you know what I mean? Or if it does, it runs its course over time.

I'll tell you what, they got the intrigue part of this sequel right. They got me back to the first film when it came to wondering "What next?" and "How does this work?" There was definitely some good on that front. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss were really the highlights that kept me intrigued as they were rediscovering themselves. The newcomers weren't bad at all (including NPH), though I wasn't feeling the recasting of Smith or Morpheus.

The rest of it, though, was iffy... starting with the action. It was choppy. Martial arts barely played as a character here, especially for Neo who has mastered some new Dragon Ball Z/Street Fighter type special attack that was loathsome. Some effects decisions were interesting and I was okay with that take on it, but everything really felt jumbled and rushed inside the matrix if it wasn't a dialogue-based scene.

Resurrections leaned heavily on the past, including inserting shots from the previous films virtually everywhere that it could. One could say it was meant for fans of the old films, but just as much it likely was to insert imagery for moviegoers who never saw the original movies. For that matter, I don't know how either party is going to receive this film. Its style is so distant from what it once was even though the lore and mystique can keep them occupied, but somebody new to the franchise may not connect with the sci-fi elements if they don't know the kind of film they're going to get. It obviously appeased many critics, though.

Matrix films were a little soft on their R ratings at times, and this is no different. I'm not saying the MPAA could've given this a PG-13, but they weren't too far off from removing an F-bomb here and a portion of a sequence there for it to be reconsidered. Just don't expect anything too over the top with that, in the sense that a 14-year-old will probably be okay seeing this. Some themes may be a little more mature and complex, but it's not very graphically obscene.

I don't know, I'm just a little underwhelmed watching this the first time. Say what you want about the sequels, but the first three are much more cohesive in style and scope even though Resurrections roots itself with the original a bit more in terms of fan service. This was missing something, and maybe it was one of the Wachowski's not being involved. I'm fine with this franchise being modernized and different than it was twenty years back, but after watching it you can also wonder if it really was the same folks behind it all... and the answer is "kinda." I liked this more than the sequels in some ways, but it bothered me a lot more at the same time. I love Reloaded and Revolutions, though. I wonder what somebody will think of this who didn't like those two films.

Nevertheless, I'm hoping for more. I'm hoping for another film, a video game, the works. This did do more world-building, and I'm not finished with the path that was set forth. WB screwed themselves over putting this on HBO MAX, but hey they're already greenlighting Dune sequels and they gave ZSJL a shot, so maybe they'll just throw money at anything. I hope this is a success no matter what my meh feelings are about this the first time through. This could've been saved with better action though, and honestly looking back at it I think this is where this one really missed the mark if I were to pick out one thing.

                      Re: The Matrix... Rebooted? (rumor)

I was a huge fan of the original Matrix (like most of you). Funny the movie has not aged that well.....I watched it for the first time in years in anticipation of this new movie. It still held up for the most part....but felt kinda dated. Still, I love the story of Neo and the entire concept of the Matrix.....that was until we got two really bad sequels.

While Reloaded had it’s moments it fell really flat. Then Revolutions completely bored me to death with all it’s hokey “trying” to be this deep statement on the human race and life....it was just blech.

Enter in The Matrix Ressurections. Ahhhhhhh the movie took me back to what I enjoyed about the original. Yes it definitely was Meta....but in a positive way and it basically made the two original sequels not required viewing anymore.

You can easily watch The Matrix and go right to this new sequel with very little trouble (yes there are some Reloaded and Revolution references but very far and few and not required to see those painfully bad movies to know what is going on).

I thought this new reboot was fun, and for the most part well paced. And it opened the door for another film of course. But we can leave it alone IMO. Just like I felt they could have left The Matrix a a stand alone (in hindsight it should have been as again the sequels were just dreadfully bad).

                      3 Stars out of 5.

An easy movie to digest and I loved the new characters and recasts actually for Morpheus and Smith. They did a great job!!
