    Re: Chris Cornell - RIP

Crushed to read this news on my way to work this morning.

Fresh Tendrils, your posts are beautifully composed. Thanks for sharing.

For me, Soundgarden was one of those bands that helped me get through the awkward teenage years in the early-mid 90's. I'd disappear into 'Black Hole Sun' 'Spoonman' and other songs after enduring another day at school of being picked on by classmates (I have a big nose, and when you're struggling to put on weight and are 6-2, it's an easy target), and everything would seem a little easier to process and deal with.

'Say Hello To Heaven' was a song that helped me cope with the passing of a close friend.

I'm hopeful that Chris, who admittedly had many ups and downs in his life, can rest in peace. Thank you for giving us the gift of your voice and music.

I saw the news early this morning and was absolutely shocked. 52 is far too young to die. While i'm not a big fan of his music I have to admit there were some songs during his Soundgarden days that I actually really liked.

This f-n sucks. For me, Chris Cornell (along with my other favorite Layne Staley) was one of rock's greatest vocalists. I couldn't get enough of his music, whether it was Soundgarden or Audioslave.

Here's a cool version of the Ohio Players funk classic, "Fopp".

So incredibly sad. Badmotorfinger is definitely a desert island disc for me.

I was just in the Seattle airport two days ago, they actually have a Subpop store in the main concourse. So much great music from the early 90's, and Soundgarden was at the forefront. R.I.P.

            Re: Chris Cornell - RIP

I had a heavy heart all day yesterday about this. Now that we have some confirmation about the cause of death I was able to gather more thoughts.

I played Seasons in my car on my morning drive and just broke into tears. Chris was a giant. One of the greatest lead rock vocalists I had ever heard. Temple Of The Dog is one of my 10 favorite albums of all time. I wanted so badly to go to one of the shows but it was not meant to be.

I will always remember Cornell as a guy who brought such power and passion into his songs and really had a way of touching my soul with his incredible song writing.

            We lost a great one.

It also saddens me that his children lost their father to a horrible disease. Depression is a powerful and dark disease. One that I don’t truly understand as I have never had any of those issues personally. But my long time friend and drummer of 30 years has battled depression ever since I have known him. It is a m*********er.

May he rest in peace and may his family heal and hopefully get closure at some point. It has to be so hard for his children to understand and grasp what just happened.

            My god man.

So many great covers throughout the years. The unplugged Billie Jean cover and Thank You are two of my favorites. I was really disappointed when the album version of Billie Jean wasn't stripped down on Carry On.

I remembered I had written a blog entry on here about driving with Temple of the Dog:

Wished I had gotten to see Soundgarden live. My friend was going to get to see them for the first time ever in Columbus this weekend at Rock on the Range. Devastating news surrounding his death. My first introduction to Chris Cornell was his work with Audioslave, but it was through Audioslave that I discovered Soundgarden and they instantly became one of my favorite bands. Soundgarden, like Alice in Chains, seemed more like a metal band to me than a grunge band.

And Cornell's vocals....my goodness. His vocal range was something to aspire to. RIP

loved non state actor from king animal though it did seem out of place on MLB13 the Show. which was alright because that was the Shows best soundtrack IMO
really loved pushing forward back, keep it off my wave, hunger strike ,spoonman, evrything from badmotorfinger, smokestack lightning and big dumb sex. down on the upside is the only album from soundgarden that I never got around to giving most of the songs a listen. the rest of their stuff I still have. I kinda feel like whenever one of these giants passes, as long as I can always listen to their music, they're not really gone

I was never a big sound garden fan, I do have the album with black hole sun, also have the temple of the dog album but haven't played it in years, not familiar with audio slave at all.

That said I'm a music lover and you would have to be deaf not to be able to hear the talent that Chris Cornell had. I always used to think man I wish that guy would get into a metal band. Anyway it's sad he left so soon and the demons he must have struggled with that brought him to take his life , so this one goes out to him. R.I.P.

I'm gonna copy and paste a comment I left on my friend's Facebook post the other day:

I'm not one to take celebrity deaths hard, at all. But. This one... I have cried twice today. This guy was a hero of mine.

When I first started singing, I remember setting him as my goal. The penultimate voice in rock. It didn't take me long to realize it was never ****ing happening. [emoji23] Before really digging in and learning what makes a vocalist great, I never truly understood how much of it is just innately natural. He was born with an amazing gift. Don't get me wrong, he worked his *** off to cultivate that gift, but he was amazingly gifted naturally.

I still have hopes of one day being able to sing his music as beautifully as he did, but I know that's likely never going to come to fruition. And that's OK. That's why HE existed. To sing those words. To connect people who never would have spoken to each other otherwise. To bridge that divide. Art, and music in particular, it really brings people together from vastly different backgrounds.

His words were beautifully dark. His voice was haunting. Scratch that; they both still are exactly what they were.

Rock lost it's last true God today.

But it will never lose the impact he has had on this generation, or the generations to come. His voice and words will live forever.
