You know what they say..... Friends don't let friends watch "Friends"! But this was a request and here it is. Vote early and often.... or once.... cause you really can't vote often!
The thing about Friends, to me at least it didn't feel like one or two of them were above the others in terms of main characters. They were divided up fairly evenly in a good way. Joey clearly was the funniest, though Phoebe had funny random moments, Monica had funny perfectionist moments, Chandler early on had good one liners, Ross was real consistent throughout(PIVOT!) and Rachel got better as series went on. I'm voting Joey though.
The Chandler character had two levels of decline. Matthew Perry's addiction to Vicodin and alcohol which left him emaciated and his eventual union with Monica which didn't work for me. Early Friends was really good, later Friends not so much.
I'm a huge fan of Matt LeBlanc because of Episodes, but no way was Joey clearly the funniest. He was the goofiest and the dimmest, but Chandler's perfectly timed one liners were one of the true strengths of the early shows.
I'm picking Rachel because I liked Rachel and Ross and I liked Jennifer Anniston's hot bod. Chandler Bing was too inconsistent.
Definitely one of those shows where the standout character varied depending upon the episode. I went with Phoebe simply bc when I think of friends she's the first one that pops in my mind.
this one is too hard to choose so I'll cop out and sit this one out.
I will say Chandler is the one I most identify with, though.
Courtney Cox grew up up just a few short miles from me, though she is 6 years older.
Friends is my favorite show ever. I've seen every episode 20+ times.
Going with Ms Chanandler Bong on this one, Phoebe and Joey tied for second.
Chandler had tons of ups and downs but he was almost always the funniest. Season 3 Chandler when he was going through his **** was still great to me. The One with the Football and The One without the Ski Trip stand out. "We can't go there. We might run into him." "Him who? Ross?" "No, hymn 253, his eyes are on the sparrow!"
Maj posted the Joey on Pyramid scene, season 10 was my favorite for him. That episode and The One Where Joey Speaks French.
Phoebe changed a ton. In the beginning she's this weird hippie and in the end she's just kinda flighty. She was always self centered in the best possible way. When Rachel and Ross needed a name for their kid: "I've got it. If it's a girl, Phoebe. If it's a boy, Phoebo."
Also best episode naming convention ever. The episodes are named the way you would describe them anyway if you couldn't remember the name. Love it.

I understand. That's me with Seinfeld and Frasier.
You didn't like the earlier Friends better than the later Friends?
As a whole I'd probably say that. My favorite 5 seasons would probably only have 6 and 10 from the latter half. The finale makes up so much for it though. It wasn't like a HIMYM situation where a show I loved I just don't even acknowledge anymore.

The series fell off for me once Ross started losing his mind and putting him into situations that felt like Joey situations. He was always goofy and nerdy, but he still had a somewhat cool edge to it in the first half of the show.
Between that and 'shipping Joey and Rachel it just lost its luster a lot. Chandler to me was the most consistent throughout the series.

One of my fave Phoebe lines was when she was spelling out her name for someone.
