I don't know what the Good Lord has in store for him but he was one of the more fascinating men of his generation. He brought class to a smutty business. If you look at the photo spreads in Playboy they're very artistic and classy and in a humble way too unlike the gaudiness of Bob Guccione's Penthouse.

Putting that aside though, Playboy was more than just a girlie magazine. It was a publication that had high standards. The magazine published some great fiction from greats like Richard Matheson. There have been scores of interesting articles and interviews throughout the life of that magazine. It was (though I don't know if it still is today) the very definition of what a men's magazine should be. It celebrated the female form and fed the mind creatively and intellectually.

R.I.P. Hugh Hefner. Every man of a certain generation thought you were the coolest man on the face of the earth and wanted to be you.

The mystique of Hugh Hefner certainly didn't remain as it once was. I mean there's no way it could have into his 90's. He's certainly iconic but his work is also divisive. However, the cultural revolution that was the 60's was in part due to his magazine, and as someone said, not because of the pictures. I know it's easy to both envy and vilify him.

As someone who "read" Playboy for a time, I can easily say that I actually did read some of the articles and cartoons. Sure, as a young teenager, it felt cool to look at this adult, racy funnies. I actually recall one cartoon from the magazine that stayed with me to this day that wasn't published for a laugh. It was a symbolic one where a very young child was standing with his father in front of a large pile of words encompassing all the negative features of life and this world: hate, racism, anger, revenge, etc. The father picked up a pile of these words and put them, literally, inside the head of the child. In the last panel it showed this grotesque, misshapen head filled with these concepts and this dark look on the child's face as he walked away. I think I remember this more than any centerfold I viewed.
