Looking for advice, projector vs. Tv

Not sure if this is the right spot, but looking for advice and opinions. Have a budget of around $900 max, and I am looking to upgrade from my 6 year old LG 46" lcd in my basement. Really only use it for sports (hockey mostly) and gaming on Xbox one and ps4. My couch is about 9 feet away from the TV, so the 46 seems small though I am happy with the picture quality of the set overall.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a 55" 4k hdr set, or getting a 1080p projector. One of the new benq models or gt1080 with low input lag.

Part of me thinks that the 55" will still be enough of a size upgrade to make it seem worthwhile, even without having a ps4 pro or xbone s or x right now, but then I would probably want to upgrade those as well which would add to costs. But even if I didn't, then at least I know I would be set for the next gen of consoles. On the contrary, throwing a projector screen up of 90" sounds pretty awesome. Sports will probably be 1080 for a while, and by the time new consoles come out 4k hdr sets might be even cheaper.

Tldr: I guess my debate here is this, is 4k hdr gaming such a jump from 1080 that it would be worth the sacrifice in screen size? The idea of a 90"+ screen sounds really cool, but would a 55“ do just as well with the ability to get hdr gaming content?

Couple of questions. Will this be your primary set? Also, are you able to control the lighting? It needs to be pretty dark to get the best out of any PJ.

I have a 4k Samsung set I use for everyday tv watching, and an Acer PJ for movies and sports.

Id wait to see what kind of Black Friday deals come out.

Light is pretty well controlled, my basement doesn't have a door at the top of the stairs so it isn't pitch black or anything during the day, but I would primarily be using this at night. I was thinking of leaving the TV there as well and just switching to the projector for gaming/sports. I also have the main TV upstairs in our living room, the basement is basically just my cave.

What do you prefer for gaming? Is the large screen more of a novelty after a while, especially in light of the picture quality on the TV?

Sorry late responding. I'm a retro gamer so all I have is a NES classic and have it hooked up to the tv. If I had a PS4 or Xbox S , I would probably run it on the pj.

I felt like I had to get both. The tv is more convenient and dont have to worry about bulb replacement. But you NEVER lose that wow factor when you can project 90 - 120 inches. I still love watching 3D movies on it.
