Video games and pro (or even organized) sports

Here's an interesting article I came across on TSN about the OHL advising players to scrub references to Fortnite on their social media:

With hours logged on Fortnite becoming an increasing concern for teams across major sports, NHL prospects are reportedly being warned to manage their references to the game on social media.

An Ontario Hockey League team employee told TSN Senior Correspondent Rick Westhead that some players have been advised to scrub references to the game from their accounts.

Fortnite has become increasingly popular over the past year, with NHLers such as
    , Mitch Marner, and

among those to speak publicly about the game.

In May, Boston Red Sox pitcher David Price was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome and some reports pointed to Fortnite as the potential cause. Earlier this summer, Canucks prospect

was accused of having a video game addiction, but the report however was retracted and later denied by general manager Jim Benning.

Benning acknowledged that video games were becoming increasingly popular among players, but said he has not yet seen a problem with any player spending too much time with a controller.

“On their down time, this is what our players do,” Benning told the Vancouver Province. “We have players who carry the box and play on the road. I have kids who play and it’s getting bigger and there’s a circuit with arenas full of people who watch guys play video games.

“It’s getting bigger. And if a player is doing it all the time and has an addiction, it could be a problem. I’ve never heard that it has been a problem.”
So this poses a question, are the people that run sports leagues out of touch here or is there a valid concern? I feel like it's a bit of a culture and generational clash where older folks are a little out of touch with the younger players today and not understanding that video game culture isn't exactly going to ruin the players.

I'll expand this to ask you guys if any of you have been addicted or feel like you're on the verge of video games controlling your life to the extent that you can't prioritize your time properly.

(I'm not sure where this should go so I put it here. If a mod decides to move it somewhere else that's cool)

    Interesting article.

I coach Travel and Middle School baseball. Kids play video games. Hell I played video games back in my days as a high school ball player.

It is up to the parents to control the screen time. I know I do.

My son spends far more time shagging fly balls, taking grounders and hitting the batting cages than playing video games. But he has down time between school and baseball and he either plays some video games or bangs on his drum kit.

I think most athletes don't have too big of an issue. Kids who don't play sports though......that is a whole other conversation.

I can easily put the controller down....weeks at a time if need be. I do not let video games run my life. And I am a big time sports gamer as many of you know.

    But I also take breaks.

I do think anyone can have an addiction. And I am sure it is a growing addiction.

Hell the phones are really the scary problem. More so than the consoles. The smartphone and social media is destroying social skills in general and is a huge problem spreading across the world and especially in North America.

Video Games? They have been around for a long time. They are just better now than they ever were.

Parents.......it is up to them. And we have crappy parents all over this country.

    Simple as that.

Growing up, I guess you could say I had an addiction to VGs. Once my grades slipped, forget it, my parents yanked that PS2 from my room and I’m thankful for it. I turned into a good student, learned how to manage time, and was rewarded with screen time on breaks, weekends, etc.

As I’ve gotten older, VGs have lost their luster. I find myself trying to socialize and meet people more than play video games. In fact, I mostly play them with my friends. I guess with both maturity and good parenting, I grew out of it.

Just so people are aware (SPTO knows this, of course), most kids in Canadian junior hockey don't live with their parents during the season.
