I gotta say, what a way to tell a story. I had no idea wtf was going on and just let the story take you on a ride.

The Yennifer arc was great, they did real good job on her transition.

Same. I played a bit of The Witcher 2 never finished it but loved Triss. So of course in The Witcher 3 I chose Triss. I do not like the actress on the show lmao.

        Re: The Witcher (Netflix series)

Wife and I got through the whole first season on New Year's day. I was surprised she wanted to watch it because she usually doesn't like those type of shows but we both ended up loving it. I was casually aware of the Witcher, as I have only played a little bit of the Witcher 3, but I thought the first season was excellent.

We were a little confused the first couple of episodes but it all came together I believe in the 4th episode and it all started to make sense. I liked the way the first season ended, as I believe they set up a few storylines for the second season.

Now I am going to start a play through in the Witcher 3 and also try to read the books its all based on. It seems like, from everyone commenting, that is the way to go to get more details and more in depth.

From playing the games, it was ok. From a story telling standpoint, it was terrible. No background, jumping through timelines, scenes for fan service that didn't make sense because of no details, etc. It's like that just shot scenes people would like and then tried to make a show out of them. And a Witcher who didn't use any mutant powers but 1 or 2 times?

Hopefully they get some better writers or just follow the books or games going forward.

I only ever dabbled in the game here and there and have not read any books (which is shocking to me because this genre is right up my alley). I thought the first season was fantastic. Really had me hooked from the start. As I finally realized what was going on with the timelines (around episode 3-4) I really got hooked. Maybe I'm not as critical as most but I loved all of it from the storytelling, to the visuals, to the music, and the little bit of comedy thrown in. Great stuff and can't wait for season 2.

Like seemingly everyone who didn't play the games or read the books, I have no idea what's going on. Not really digging the Geralt character either.

              Bailed out after 4 episodes.

Ah man. Episode 5 is where it really starts going. 1-4 were mostly backstory stuff. Trying to give you an idea of the world they are in. Give it at least another episode. The back half is the best half.

I am with you. Wife had never heard of The Witcher till we watched the show together. She said the first few episodes are confusing but, like you said, the last half of the season is where the show actually hits its stride and gets better. I, for one, loved the show as a whole. I actually think season 2 will be better than season 1 since they have laid the groundwork throughout season 1.

What ground work though? Did they give background on anyone but Yennifer? The whole thing just assumed you knew what was going on or didn't care to know. Then they threw in some stuff for Geralt to do, but gave no real reason why. They also gave very little info on what a Witcher was.

They really needed to do something like the first training in the game so you could figure out who and what everyone is.

As far as I've read/watched from breakdowns this is based on the books and not the game. The game is a sequel to the books. The show is following the first two books (with the whole split timeline aspect) and it is following the books very closely. Just throwing that out there.

With the exception of hearing about some critics panning it, the posts in this thread are the first examples I've seen of people not liking this show. No show works for everyone.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

I understand that, but from a storytelling standpoint for 8 hours you have to give some background to build the characters. A little this is what a witcher is and this is what is going on instead of just randomly dropping in on the witcher for a few fights and then going back to Yennefer or Ciri.

The game also was based on the books and most of the stuff with Geralt they showed were loosely in the games.

                              Re: The Witcher (Netflix series)

This is certainly compelling at times (4 episodes in) and the different timelines weren't hard to suss out personally. I am following what is going on and honestly following most of the characters that keep popping up and peppering the screen with names and places.

Apart from the B or C level production style my main concern is how disjointed everything feels and how little exposition there actually is. Now that the separate timeline is clear it adds even more separation to the three different stories (Yenn, Geralt, Ciri). Not to mention the fact that Geralt just seems to be wandering around and encountering different monsters that may or may not tie into the main narrative (or any part of any narrative for that matter) apart from invoking the rule of surprise.

Yenn's story is the most compelling part of the show, but even there could have benefited from some exposition so we could not only know what is happening, but try and suss out some character development and motivation. Instead we have a literal character transformation in 3 episodes and instantly she's brought in to serve as a royal mage. Exposition would help tremendously with all these side character Kings running around who you're left to wonder about how they fit into the world and what their standing is.

It is compelling and entertaining. I think that is what most of the audience is pulled in by, but the show could have benefited so much more by actually building the world and it's characters.

We've watched the first three episodes and have been enjoying it so far. I've never read the books or played the games so I feel lost and don't know who/what the characters are talking about or why they are doing the things that they're doing at times.

It feels kind of like show is cut up into three different segments (Geralt, Jennifer, and the blonde princess) like the old Creepshow movies or something but I'm sure they will all tie in together eventually. It's been entertaining though and I'm looking forward to continuing.
