    The Smart Home Thread

I’m in the market of having some smart lights in the house. Planning in the living room, man cave and maybe the master bedroom.

I was looking at Philipps Hue and TP Links system but Philipps looks like the winner with its app. Any suggestions?

Mike we have Phillip Hues in the bedroom. They work great and are very responsive with our echo dot

Hue are supposedly really nice...i've been interested, but most of my lights have multiple bulbs (ceiling fans and the like), or they're recessed bulbs in the ceiling (again, multiple), so I'd have to replace wall switches with smart ones and I haven't cared enough. My parents like the couple Hue bulbs they have.

Speaking of smart home stuff, any suggestions about google assistant supported smart plugs?

Thinking about just getting a solo one, meaning it just controls one thing(for next month it'd just be for tree lights, after that it might be moved for something like a lamp) , but looking at bigger ones, seems like they also have smart power bars with USB charging ports too. Not sure if that let's you control each individual outlet on the powerbar though.

From looking around, decision could end up being either:
              1. Getting a multi pack(so 2 individual plugs, meaning I can use them in different rooms)
              2. Getting a power bar with usb charging (so it can only be used in one room, but multiple things can be plugged in)

I'm doing this. I'm going to replace some bulbs with Hue ones, but also replace the wall switches. I'll have to wire the bulbs to always be on and the switch will only tell the hub to turn on/off the bulb. That way the wall switches will still work and I won't have to carry around a device or show others how to use it.

For normal bulbs, will just replace the switch and wire it normal so it turns it on and off.

I won't do voice control, just don't want it in my home with what the companies do with your data. It's bad enough just having a phone.
