I have a question about WiFi extenders.

Ok, so we have one of those duel router/modem combos and the Wifi isn't too much of a problem as we don't have a very big house, but since my daughter is home from school and her room is basically as far away from the router/modem as possible, she is getting some really slow speeds while gaming or streaming. It's also causing me some issues downstairs streaming.

So here's the thing. I bought a Netgear N300 extender and got it hooked up and was working near the router/modem so I brought it upstairs and plugged it into the closest outlet we have, which I would say is 20 feet or so away. Maybe a little more. And I get zero signal. It doesn't pickup anything. Keep in mind that two of the other bedrooms upstairs pick up the existing Wifi pretty well.

So I'm not sure what the issue is here. Is it just too far to get a signal and extend it? The one I got was like $25. Are more expensive ones better at picking up the main signal further away?

    Thanks for the help guys.

I've dealt with extender in my life. I hate them lol

I've always pointed my company and family to access points. A good example is Google WiFi. Suggested for my mother-in-law and see loves it. Easy set up. But super reliable.

It could be interference at that location. If you can get a signal with your phone right there, it could be just a bad wifi card in it.

I would look at a wifi mesh router if you are having issues in multiple locations. The modem/router combos aren't great once you start pushing them by streaming a bunch. They are easy to setup and most come with 3 as a starter pack.

I used a Netgear one a while back to get internet to daughters room (Other end of house from Router) and it worked great. N500 or something like that... I think it was...

Re: I have a question about WiFi extenders.

I rather would just buy a more powerful standalone router. Far as AP, you make any router an AP. Hell you can make multiple APs if you have more then one router. N300 isn't strong at all. The best Netgear WIFI extender is the AC1200.

Keep in mind though an extender is only as good as the router source it is picking up from. So if the router combo is weak to begin with then, an extender not going to make it better. Now once you can actually pick up a strong signal, how good it is when multiple are on it at once depends on your internet speed.

Overall combo routers are generally always trash. Pretty much every ISP always be pushing that crap on customers. I tell people if your ISP provider allows it, not all do, you are better off buying a stand alone modem and a stand alone router. If not then just buy a router and put your modem/router combo into bridge mode.

You can buy a Netgear AC1200 for $90 at Best Buy or Netgear AC750 for $60 at Best Buy. Both are cheaper on Amazon of course.
