Xbox 360 Backwards for certain games?

I found this information off of Gamespy, it was a review of the 3 press conferences. They said that it will be backwards compatible with certain games, WTF is that, either its backwards compatible or not?

"The big news of the day was that the Xbox 360 would be backwards-compatible with certain games (I'm betting on Grabbed by the Ghoulies and Brute Force, natch), as well as the fact that Square Enix would be developing games for the system, starting with ... Final Fantasy XI, a game that's been out for over a year. Oh well, I guess you gotta start somewhere."

Some think it's just an effort to cover their butts. When the PS2 released, it was said to be backwards compatible with ALL PS1 games. When it was found out that it wasn't, Sony had to bite the bullet and admit that they were wrong. Maybe the 360 is backwards compatible with most Xbox games, but there may be a select few from the Xbox's early days that it isn't compatible with?

At least, that's what I'm hoping.

The only games that I need it to be backwards compatible for are Halo 2 and NFL2K5. I assume that Halo will be fine. 2K5 I'm not so sure of, and that will likely determine whether I hang onto my old Xbox or I trade it in towards the new one.

Excuse my *******ness, but I have never known whay "backwards compatible" means. I like to furmulate my own theories but this one just baffles me. Someone fill me in.

It means that you will be able to play Xbox games on your Xbox 360 or PS2 games on your PS3.

It lets you get rid of your old console but still keep your favorite games for it. You won't need to have your Xbox take up a lot of shelf space.

That, and I'm sure MS realizes that many of the potential buyers for the Xbox 360 might want to trade in their original Xbox towards their purchase.

Well it doesn't matter much for me because once I get a Next-Gen game I wouldn't want to play an old one, maybe once in a while I would pop it in but if it's only for the best games, that's good enough.

Ok, I see. I find it hard to get back into older games after a new console hits. Only a few classics but for the most part, when the new consoles arrive, those old games will collect dust.

That's exactly what I was saying. I wouldn't play Halo 2 when Halo 3 is out
