I had no idea about that. That shocks me though, I didn't think they could license something like that.

Since Toshiba is leading the new joint for HD-DVD, I'm sure that it's a whole different ballgame right? How come they had to pay Sony royalties? I'm not understanding that. I don't remember them having a Sony DVD player in their XBOX did they? Clarify for me please. I'm just lost....

IMO, they already have done something stupid. I mean they are already jacking up the cost of the system with two Video outputs and the Blu-Ray DVD. Then they decide to save money by eliminating what would be the most useful of the three in a hard drive.

            Dear Sony,
I am not interesting in buying a console to help you promote your new DVD format or sell more HDTV's. I want the best GAMING experience that I can get. I am willing to pay more money for superior hardware so PLEASE get the standard harddrive in there.

You sir are clearly the only one willing to pay even more. Their 40GB HDD costed about $50, $100 if you got it out the store with FFXI which sucked balls IMO. I could care lessa bout 7 connection Blue Tooth slots for controllers I won't be using. I want the normal four slots with memory cards available from previous system and a HDD for around the same price as XBOX 360. Would love the regular price given for games to not exceed $50, but I'm willing to work a little harder for those games I want. Just don't make no sense. I wonder how much of a loss they're taking with their system compared to Microsoft....??

in my eyes, what sucks with the ps3 not shipping with a HD, is that game developers again have to develop for the lowest common demonator, memory cards...so is it possible some PS3 games won't have the in game saves people want because w/o a hard drive it's pretty tough to make happen? Sure, the HDD will be an addon, but developers won't be able to assume everyone has one, because most gamers won't...somewhat concerning to me

I think Sony has considered all of these things before they announced it. I also believe that Sony can produce the Blu-Ray disks themselves instead of buying disks from other corporations saving money.

You never played ESPN NFL 2k5 for the PS2?

They made the game for HDD and non HDD users. It's not impossible to develop a game like that.

not saying it's impossible, but do you really see every developer making the effort to add things for a hard drive that probably less than 10% of the system's owners will have? It just didn't really work out well for the PS2 HDD (Everyone i've heard comment on it said it was a waste of money basically), so I suppose I'm skeptical on hoping that developers take that into account.

I feel that it was the biggest dumb move I've ever made in my life dealing with video games. It was a gimmick that got a few people kind of caught up in the hype that was the HDD. I thought I would have had the same kind of flow that the XBOX had. Wasn't even close. Just horrible. Even when it came out, games still aren't using its capabilities. It's non-existent. Just somewhere to hold all those game saves and "stuff." Honestly, I did find something useful enough to do with it. I have NFL 2K5 and it does nice. Ironically, I still can't save music onto the drive and import it into the game which would have put Sony over the top. Goodness, another drop of the soap IMO....

What is with this pre-installed crap on their hard drives? Why don't they just give people the hard drive and if they want to have linux on there then let them install it themselves? It makes no sense for people to have to have something on there that they might not ever use.

I sure have no games that I want to see played on the PS3 because I know that I'm not going to be all interested in all that. The only thing that old games are good for are coasters. Maybe others are different but my hunger for gaming increases with expectations of the next-gen games. The games will most likely play fine. What I'm hearing is the possibility of cutting off a leg of the Cell. Ironically, that's not what I'd be paying for, not a complete cell chip in my system. That's less power than they were putting out. And they were claiming that it was the true console of the next-gen. I don't know. I'm sure I have no clue how it all works either but so far, the guy is looking "sloppy" to me. I'm not truly bashing....I'm lying. Yes I am. Just looks like his whole approach is suspect.

                            :y4: LMAO :y4: and agreeing....
Exactly. And I have no idea why they would spend all that money building the cell with a defective part in it. That's the first time that I've ever heard of that happening. If they only wanted to use seven then why not just build it with seven?

And developers will have to assume that most people won't have a hard drive for the ps3 because the last hard drive that sony had didn't sell at all.

But it's a huge waste of time to develop like that and a majority of the companies won't do it. That's exactly why you don't see many ps2 games that support the hard drive.
