How do I tell if my Xbox has a Thompson Drive??

The last week or so my Xbox has been freezing a ton and it's really getting annoying. I only play MVP, but I've tried other games to see if it's MVP that's messed up or my Xbox. Well, just about every game freezes less than 3 minutes after I have it turned on. I've gone about a week now w.o playing a game of MVP. A few months ago I sent away to Microsoft and got that new, safe powercord but that didn't really fix my problem.

My Xbox's manufacture date or whatever is April 22, 2002.

I really wanna get this resolved since NCAA comes out on Tues.

I'm sure someone has the picture comparison on one of the websites. It's been posted a few times and I have it saved on my home PC.

Basically, the Samsung has 2 holes on the drive tray, the Phillips has 2 rings where the disc goes, and the Thompson one is the plane jane of the group.

Thanks PK, I actually have the Philips drive. I guess my system has just taken too much of a beating over the years.

I'm on my 3rd XBOX. The first two had Thompson drives and messed up after a year, but now I have a Samsung drive. It's so cool looking.

Yeah, you never know. I have a Thomson and have had no problems at all since I bought it in August 2002. These electronic devices are fickle.

My drive was actually replaced by Microsoft and it was replaced with another Thompson. No problems with it since but I am not rough on electronics.

I have been wondering if my Xbox is still defective though, Sports games just don't control tight on it and my rumble locks a lot. Been thinking about replacing the box because of this. It is weird because it only happens with EA games and sometimes in Halo. The rumble has never locked in another game that I can recall.

This is one reason I am going back to the PS2 for the football games this year. But the PSP connectivity to Madden franchise is the clincher and why I may just not worry about replacing this Xbox until I am ready to buy the 360.

Strange, for along time only Sega games froze on my Xbox. I haven't played a Sega game in about 3 months, and its like my Xbox just migrated to freezing on EA games. Weird stuff, I just want NCAA '06 to work in a couple of days.

My Xbox, which has a manfactured date very close to yours in April '02, just died on me in May. I found out that it was the DVD drive (I had a Phillips too). I replaced the drive with a Thomson drive and it has worked great since then. You might want to swap out the drive now before yours just dies on you too.

My first Xbox which I got in 2003 I believe died on me in December/January (04/05). It would power up but wouldn't play any discs and I'm almost positive it was a Thomson drive. My new one is a Phillips and I haven't had a single problem with it.

Friend of mine changed it for me but there are tons of online tutorials for it. It's very easy after watching him do it. I bought the drive on Ebay for about $20 and it took all of 10 minutes to change it out.

Same here but I am starting to get worried seeing how everyones systems are breaking down. And to think the old Genesis has been running all these years.
