    Morrowind

Hey fellahs, I need some help. I just got morrwind. I have a character that is a high elf, that I want to be good with the bow. I don't know what other skills to give the guy that will be useful. I am thinking of starting the game over ( I am still level 1) I can't for the life of me beat that damn mage in the first cave where you use the slave key to free those guys locked up. He uses some fire attack and kills me like in one or two blows. I know the high elf is weak against magic attacks. Do I need to create a knew character or just get stronger to beat the mage in the cave?

If you want to be good with a bow, you just need to be high in your marksman skill. As far as the mage in the cave, you just need to get close to him. If you stand far away, at your level, he will most likely kill you. If you get close to him, use a sword or knife to hit him. Being that close, he won't be able to get off many spells. There's a nice battle axe in a stump near the lighthouse that you can use too.

Thanks Caseyd. I was wondering, is there a difference between the markmanship rating if I chose to be a wood elf? Although the wood elves are short little b*stards, the manuel says they are the best archers. Also, if I do start over as a wood elf is there much of a difference between a scout and a thief? Currently, I am a high elf thief, who's weapon of choice is a bow. I have been playing the game a while now but still haven't leveled up yet (level 1) What do I do to level up. I attempted to find the strategy guide yesterday but no one has a copy.

As for the mage in the cave, dont worry about him now. You are to low a level to fight him right now. Get back to him when you get more XP. In order to get some quick XP, you can do a few things to get started.

        1. This is somewhat cheesy but as long as you dont rely on this method at all times. You can jump around everywhere you go to increase your athletic attribute. It goes up quicker than anything else.

        2. You can take a dive in the sea and swim around till your level goes up.

        3. Once you get somewhat deeper in the game, find a person who can create spell and scrolls and enchantments for you. Create a spell that is super weak and takes hardly any of you magic points and barely give any damage and keep practicing that one spell until you succeed in casting over and over again. You'll get better at that magic attribute. You can make a spell in each school of magic for a quick way to level up.

        4. Whenever you see a weak enemy, dont forget to practice using your bow. You cant get better if you dont use it.

Also, check out the numerous FAQs at gamefaqs. You'll find everything you need to learn there.

Thanks Graphik, I am glad you responded because I know you have and love the game. Yeah, I kind of figured I was too low a level to deal with that mage, but I just want to kick his a**. Everytime I go to free the prisoners in the cave he comes running and eventually I end up shooting one of the prisoners by accident, which causes him to start fighting me along with the mage and of course I just get beat down and killed, it is quite hilarious. I would go and get gamefaqs, but currently I have no home access to the net (I have digital phone, and I cant get roadrunner until I uprade to microsoft 2000) Also, I can't get access at work because they have that damn surf control. So, I come to you guys for help. One last thing, is it better to be a wood elf or a high elf? I know I can customize my high elf to be an archer, but is the wood elf that much better at it? I like the high elf better because the wood elfs are just too short. Oh, can I increase my bow skill by just shooting arrows into a building, or do I have to kill something?

I believe you have to shoot enemies to increase that skill. I don't think the type of elf really matters. I'm a dark elf (not specializing in marksman), and have my marksman up to 70 or something like that. Later in the game, you can buy training from Master trainers and raise your level up pretty high.

You should automatically get level ups as you increase skills. Like Graphic said, the easiest skills to level are acrobatics (from jumping) and swimming. Also, go around and kill rats and other creatures that hang out outside of the first town. Did you meet Fargoth yet? Gamefaqs has a lot of good information.

What's up casey. Yeah, I met Fargoth, I gave him back his ring and everything. I didn't take on the quest to steal his gold, he seems always happy to see me, so I couldn't do it to the poor little b*stard. Anyway, I have walked all the way to Bormora (spelling) along the way some guy feel out of the sky and landed dead on the ground, so I got his robe and hat and lightning sword. The thing is I have encountered very few enemies (one rat, and two of those shell things). I have joined the thieves guild, and the blades (from cassius) so, I am waiting to level up so that I can be effective at some of the quests. Right now I can't even beat that freakin mage in the cave, gosh I am starting to hate that guy (he has killed about 15 times). But Graphik said once I level up I should be able to get him. Once I do finally kill him I am going strip him naked and then kick him down a hole or something.

Just go around near the water in Seeda Nyan (spelling?). There should be tons of mud crabs to kill.

Fellahs, how do you go about getting a house/place of your own to put your stuff? Also, if I go with unarmored as a major skill, can I still get a cloak without lowering my armor skill?

Kill the owner of the house you want. BUT...make sure this person is'nt involved in a major or minor quest. Here is what you do. Before you murder the current tennant, save the game then murder the tennant. If you killed a major character, a prompt will pop up and tell you that you altered the game and you might not be able to finish it, do you want to continue. If so, reload.

Also, dont scatter all your items across the map. Use one house for ingredients and alchemist tools(those things are super heavy) and use another house in another town for equppment you want to sell later and then use another house for miscellaneous stuff like potions, keys and other various items you cant carry. If you want you can keep it all at the same house but its better to use multiple houses to limit the traveling. Sometimes you may be on the other side of the map and you may waste time traveling back to get back home. Multiple homes is the solution. And make sure its in a town with a Mage who can warp you to diffrent Mage's guilds and has a Silt Strider. (Your Taxi)

As for the unarmored question, you can wear a cloak with no penalty whatsoever. The cloak is just used as a magic item you can equip.

Thanks Graphik. I was going to ask how to get a place without killing someone, but I guess that is not an option, my hand is forced, I will be swift yet merciful. I will kill someone who I can reason is worthy of killing. Your strategy concerning multiple homes is on point. But if I do kill multiple people will I get a bounty on my head? Will the guards or anyone else find out about it, causing me to get penalized or punished for it?

Not if they dont see you. You only get a bounty if you start a fight in public or get caught pick pocketing or stealing in public. Behind closed doors, its just you and your victim.

But if you wanna be on the safe side, try intimidating your victim till he takes the first shot. OR...you can steal something from him/her directly in their face, then they'll attack you.

Yeah, I've got this mod called "A Good Place to Stay." The place is gigantic. It has labeled chests, jars, etc. for everything you can think of and has tons of table space for all my swords and such. It has a bedroom, alchemy room, weapons room, etc. Very cool.

If you just have the X-Box version, a good house to get is in Balmora. You can kill this guy named Duragabos (something similar to the name). It may even be part of your initiation to the Fighter's guild if I remember correctly. He lives near one of the bridges. It has some decent shelf space and a big chest. It's good for starting out. Also, later on in the game, you can join one of the three main houses (Redoran-fighters, Hlaalu-thieves, or Televanni-mages) and get a house of your own built for you.
