Yes, but the PS2 didn't have any real competition until the XBox came along. Developers would not stop coding games for the PS2 since it was the top selling game console.

I think Microsoft is doing everything the right way. Making a console with everything you need, selling it at a decent price, and making it easier for the game developers. If anyone has a chance to overthrow the Playstation juggernaught, its Microsoft.

I personally hope both consoles do well. The more competition, the better it is for us, the consumers.

That guy, much like many famous gaming idols from the 90's like the MK founders, have no relevance in today's industry. Especially someone like Carmack.

Exactly. No relevance whatsoever. Who cares.

And yeah the PS2 was apparantly more difficult to program for than the Xbox but it was also the weaker, graphically.

If the PS3 is anywhere between an inch and a mile better graphically than the Xbox 360 then this will be a whole different story.

            Carmack no relevance?

You have to be kidding me...:y4:

You'll have a different perspective on what Carmack said, if you read the full transcript.

Re: Carmack says PS3 is a pain in his

Carmack was on G4TV, and he had some more comments about the PS3 and Xbox 360.

John Carmack: "Xbox 360 has far and away the best development tools"

John Carmack: "talks about software development support, and the hardware is comparable"

Geoff: "So you don’t think PS3 is going to more powerful than Xbox 360?"

John Carmack: "PS3 is probably marginally more powerful, in terms of raw flops and graphic operations, but that’s not really the best way to look at things. When you look at these development cycles that stretch over years and years, being 20% easier to develop on is much more important than being 20% more powerful."

John Carmack: "I make little nitpicky decisions about say, well, I prefer the symmetric approach that Microsoft has over the asymmetric Cell approach, but you can do great games on either one of them, and I make fundamental decisions based on development tools and depth of documentation, which Microsoft has been superior on."

              - Thinks in next-next-gen (one coming up after this one, ie PS4/Xbox 720) that it will be a lot harder to tell the difference between games and CG, unless you closely examine them.

              - Seems really impressed with the Xbox 360, said that this is the first time a console has as good a development environment as PC (tools, documentation etc). Xbox 360 is the main console for iD development now.

Don't matter what happens now. These next couple of years are going to be quite interesting. I just hope that th PS3 doesn't fade far from glory because of their higher pricing and harder equipment. This is quite interesting. I bet a lot of Sony lovers might not like this....
