    PS3 on Amazon.com for $299

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...X0DER&v=glance

the funny (or sad) part is there are 18 reviews for it already. The price could change. Odd how they put it up today, the same day the price of the 360 was announced.

    Re: PS3 on Amazon.com for $299

I find it odd that the “$299” price is no longer shown…but what if… and this is a big if, it will be $299 at launch. What kind of a blow would it deliver to the Xbox 360? I know a lot of people swear by heaven and earth that the PS3 will launch for no less than $400. I don’t subscribe to this theory at all for a couple of reasons.

    1. PS1--$299, PS2--$299, PS3--$299?? “I believe the trend will continue.”
    2. A $399+ price point for a console has never been a successful venture. It’s never happened. Sony has to know this.
    3. I haven’t read or head about this too much but you have to consider the economic climate. We are still in a recession. Gas prices at or around $3/gal., high unemployment rates, laughable bank interest rates AND lets not forget, we are still at war for the next what, x, y, z years to come.

I just don’t see “Joe gamer” plunking down $400~$500 on video game console. I would be shocked, if they launched the PS3 for more than $299.

I don't understand why anybody would think a PS3 would be only $299.

it will be impossible to sell for $299, thanks to the blu ray drive.

sony has spent too much money on that technology to just give it away.

ive heard reports of blu ray dvd players retailing for $600-$700 when they are first released.

        Sony cant undercut itself.

it will most likely be 399, if not more...

sony's head guy himsself has already said that 'if someone really wants something, they will pay more money for it." (or something along those lines)

          Re: PS3 on Amazon.com for $299

Funny, I remember it was not too long ago that the ~ $400 price tag was bandied about by “analyst” regarding the PSP. They managed to launch at $250. Well below those estimates that were being knocked around.

Now the Blu-Ray argument is interesting. It’s been said by many to be the “next-gen” media format. It has also been said to be very expensive. Lets take a trip in the old time machine back to 1999. “The DVD format will be the next-gen media format” but expect it to cost an arm and a leg. Well, they managed to include it in the PS2 at a launch price of $299. I would not be surprised if history repeats it’s self here with the PS3.

Of course that $299 Amazon price could mean a couple of things. Take your pick.

          1. A factual error. / Some sort of typo.
          2. Sony saying- “Hey gamers, the PS3 will match the price point of the Xbox 360’s core package.”
          3. Some sorts of clandestine theory orchestrated buy Sony and Amazon to trick gamers into thinking that it will launch at said price in an attempt to make them hold on to their riches, then hit them with an inflated price.

Again, I just can’t see it retailing here in the U.S. for over $299 at launch. IMHO it would take some big balls by Sony to serve it up at $400 ~ $500 and say to America, “come and get it! get it while it’s hot!” I think that would be suicidal. They would price themselves right out of the race.

It's interesting how when the PS3 was rumored to be $399, people (including myself) went bonkos, and then the Xbox announced that its bundle would be $399. I don't think I am buying either system initially, or at all, but I'm curious to see what the PS3 sells for.

it wont take big balls for sony to release at 399, because microsoft already did it....

Merrill Lynch Japan predicts Sony will lose more than $1 billion on hardware during its next-gen console's first year on the market--a sum it may not be able to recoup.

I'm willing to bet the PS3 opens betweens $449-499. Sony is so far in the red as a company its not even funny. The only way the PS3 comes out cheaper then that is the launch being delayed until next christmas which I have heard rumors of. Sony cannot afford it as a company to lose $200 or more per console this time around.

I am buying both systems regardless so don't hate me for breaking this news to ya.

Just wait untill Sony releases some more info.

I don't think anyone knows how much anything costs to include in the PS3 unless they work for them, so I'm all for the cheaper.

Sony is in an excellent position with their pricing strategy, IMO.

They have already created the “perception” that it will be “expensive” (exactly does the word “expensive” mean to them?) and that you will have to “work more hours” to save enough money to by it. However, if/when they launch (I’m guessing that it will launch, Spring 2006 in Japan and holiday 2006 here in the U.S.) at the lower price point of $299, people will respond positively, unlike much of the negative backlash that their competitors received for taking the opposite approach.

                        straight from the horses mouth-
"Whether consumers think a product is expensive or cheap all depends on the balance between its appeal and price," he said. "Our ideal [for the PS3] is for consumers to think to themselves, 'OK, I'll work more hours and buy it.' We want people to feel that they want it, no matter what."

"When Nintendo was selling its 16-bit machine at around 12,500 yen ($114), we sold the first PlayStation at 39,800 yen ($364)," continued Kutaragi. "The press was saying that it was expensive, but it was a huge hit. It's the same thing with the PlayStation Portable from last year. The Game Boy Advance is a same handheld gaming machine, and it costs less than 10 thousand yen ($91). On the other hand, our PSP had cost 25,000 yen ($229). But people lined up overnight to buy it, and it sold out on the day of its launch. It all depends on whether people want it. Of course, I'm confident that the PS3 is a product that people will definitely want."

again, PS3 WILL NOT be 299
