    Xbox and disaster

When the original Xbox was released in 2001, a few months earlier there was 9/11 now before the release of the 360 we have Katrina. I don't know what effect 9/11 had on initial sales of the Xbox but Katrina could hurt sales of the Xbox 360, not really important in the grand scheme but interesting. I will be a little nervous when the Xbox 720 drops.

Getting a new video game system is the last thing on alot of peoples minds affected by this either directly or indirectly. You have a whole city basically wiped out, a whole region. This will have a ripple effect as we have seen in gas prices, so I do think it will hurt sales, not a whole lot but some. Luckilly for Mircorsoft the launch is not until November.

It will only affect sales in those regions and really only in Louisiana. New Orleans was the only major city destroyed by the hurricane, so it wont affect sales that much.

                ummm...yes it will...

                it will affect EVERYONE's wallet

with gas going up, and no end in sight, everyone will soon have MUCH less free money to spend. All Product prices will increase, because gas has gone up so MUCH.... this will affect all of the entertainment industry, IMO.

I don't think it will, if you wan't somthing you find a way to buy. Just like gas you know you need so you will have no choice to buy it. The same goes XBox I think if people want they will but it. May sound stupid but it's true.

So I guess major cities getting destroyed is a common occurence, I think the magnitude of this event is somewhat understated. This is unprecendented in modern American history that a whole city is completely destroyed.

You're comparing the level of need for an Xbox to that of gasoline? Give me a f*cking break.

You NEED gasoline to power a vehicle to get you to work, get you to the doctor, get you to the grocery store. If you own a vehicle, gas is NOT a discretionary purchase.

Video gaming is discretionary. We all would function just fine without it. But many of us would not function fine without private transportation, and gas is an essential component of that private transportation.

I can't believe people are naive enough to compare an Xbox to gasoline as one of the necessities of life. If you really think that way, I suggest that you get fresh air for the first time in a week or go talk with a guy who's making minimum wage and now must pay nearly double the price for gas that he did six weeks ago to get to work.

How important is that Xbox 360 now?

                      Take care,

He wasnt saying that the need for gas or an xbox is the same. He was saying that if someone really wanted the Xbox 360, they will find a way to buy it. I dont think that this tragedy will have a noticible effect on the sales of the new system.

well maybe it wont affect you, but i promise there will be plenty of moms and dads out there who will not be able to thrown down $500+ for a video game system....

when (notice i didnt say if) gas hits $4 a gallon, people will have to make choices, and electronic entertainment will be one of the first to get cut from spending....

Again nobody ever said people wouldnt be affected by this disaster. My point (and I think his too) is that I dont think that a large number of people outside of the NO area who were planning to shell out 400+ dollars in November will now not be able to because gas went up 1 buck a gallon. A week ago the national average was $2.61 and now its in the mid 3's.

I think the large majority of people and families who buy XBOX 360 are people whose lifestyle wont be greatly affected by having to shell out 1 dollar or 2 per gallon more at the pump. Sure there are some people who are saving just to be able to afford the Xbox 360 and those people may not be able to afford it but I dont think that is a significant part of MS's consumer base.
