Excellent game demo, just a few small things that bother me about the gameplay. I think I will wait for this to drop in price or pick it up used.

            Re: Exclusive: Inside Too Human

            Interview: Silicon Knights Denis Dyack

Kikizo: I remember seeing Too Human shown in video form at Spaceworld 2000, the GameCube's unveiling. But apparently the game's roots predate even this?

Dyack: A lot of people think we started development in 1992 and that's completely incorrect - really development started on the 360 only when we started on this particular version. When we became a second party of Nintendo we weren't working on Too Human during that time, we were working on Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear Solid. Then we started working on the Unreal engine and reworking it took a long time, but now that we're past all that it's really come together.
Kikizo: How much work on the second and third games are done, is the story complete?

Dyack: The story was done a long time ago. The theme of the first game is discovery, the theme of the second game is revenge, and the third game, enlightenment. And the trilogy and the whole idea of focusing on the Norse mythology and effects on technology we think is really going to turn people's heads. There are so many things you can focus on with Too Human; you can focus on the multiplayer, the visceral combat, the deep RPG system. We're tending really not to focus on talking about our story, because we're known for story! But in my opinion the story in Too Human is the best story we've ever created. It's really, really solid, we've had a long time to think about it. That's one of the things that has been in our heads for, you know, a decade. I'm really personally interested to see how it's going to do in Europe, because in North America, Norse mythology is not that well known, but in Europe people know Norse mythology, and I love it when people from Europe ask us why we have used certain characters, that gets us really excited because when people find out what we're really doing, I think they're going to like it.
Kikizo: What would you say the overall size of this first Too Human is?

Dyack: First play through is probably around fifteen hours, I guess, it depends. To get to level fifty, it's anywhere from fifty to eighty hours. It's a lot! There's a lot there to want to dig! And to get all the epic loot - I don't even know if it's possible to get everything in the game, it's probably not - not for a single person. We've got a pretty big team testing, and all of Silicon Knights is testing, and just last week I found a combo that I'd never tried before, and that's a major part of the game.

Kikizo: What about a percentage that shows how much you've discovered, so that people have an idea of how much of the game they have truly seen?

Dyack: Well there is that as far as exploring the game, but as far as finding everything in the game, that is practically impossible. So, have you seen the full game, all the cinema? Yes, we have a percentage for that, but for someone to try to find everything, is probably not possible! It would be equivalent to saying: "how much of World of Warcraft have you seen?" - once you get to level fifty, there's epic sets for every different type of class and specialty - it's not measurable! There's not really a game like this, in my opinion, where you combine action with RPG. We think people are going to be really happy with what they're getting here. As you can tell, I'm excited about it - I think it's our best game to date.

IGN: Too Human Review - 7.8
Amidst impossible expectations, a decent experience.

Too Human is a game that is going to excite some, confuse others, and leave some wondering what the fuss is all about. It's the first entry into a trilogy of games from Silicon Knights, makers of hits such as Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. With that pedigree, a lot has been expected out of this Xbox 360 exclusive. What's been delivered in the end is a good game that ultimately falls just short of its promise due to a few questionable design decisions. One thing is for sure, though. If you love collecting random loot drops, you'll find a lot to like here.

                Gamespot Review - 5.5

                The Good
                • A constant supply of interesting weapons and armor
                • Combat can be fun when it gets in a groove
                • Skill trees give you a lot of room to mold your character
                • Co-op play can be enjoyable as long as both players are around the same level.

                The Bad
                • The story doesn't get interesting until the final minutes
                • Too many elements chop up the pace
                • Area attacks and status effects are poorly implemented
                • Ranged combat is unsatisfying.
                1UP Review - C-

At the very least, the cyber-Norse concept of Too Human is a good one that's worth exploring further, just not in this context. The game is simply schizophrenic; it attempts to be all things to all people and never succeeds in executing any of them well. The end result is in dire need of polish and focus, and that doesn't solely apply to gameplay mechanics. There's absolutely no reason why a game released in 2008 should have a bug where characters can fall through solid ground and into some pseudoabyss.
                Giant Bomb - 3/5

As the first part of a planned trilogy, Too Human doesn't do a particularly good job of setting things up. If anything meaningful happens in this game aside from establishing a villain, it was lost on me. The only way I got anything interesting out of it was to start searching for web pages devoted to Baldur's place in Norse mythology to see how many liberties Silicon Knights is taking with its fiction and to see what sorts of things could lie ahead in the next games. As a game, the action is a little too straightforward for its own good. The latent loot fiend in me had fun uncovering new items, slotting runes, and finding blueprints for new items--but even that stuff doesn't feel as fleshed out as you'd probably expect. In short, large parts of Too Human feel like they were designed to the standards of the last generation of consoles, not this one.
                GamePro -4/5

Almost ten years in the making, Too Human has seen its fair share of development troubles. First announced for the original Playstation, moved to the GameCube and ultimately finding a home on the Xbox 360, the game has been a lightening rod for criticism and controversy. But, as the old saying goes, the proof is in the pudding, and while it's not perfect, Too Human definitely has enough going for it to silence its critics. Read on for our review of the Xbox 360 exclusive title, Too Human!

                  GameSpy Review

Deprived of a decent storyline, innovative mechanics, and limited variation in either enemies or environments, Too Human is barely worthy of a weekend rental. It's an extremely repetitive treadmill set in a world you'll never get a chance to actually learn anything about thanks to the almost complete lack of exposition. Whatever points it scores for its somewhat interesting approach to combat are almost instantly retracted once you perform them for the umpteenth time on the same robot that fights in the same way. Unfortunately, Too Human can't even provide decent graphics at a consistent framerate, as graphical hitches and choppy visuals are a regular occurrence. All of these negatives leave little reason to recommend Too Human.

Ouch. This game is getting Lair and Haze like reviews. I wouldn't be so sure about this being a trilogy, at least the other games being published by Microsoft. They certainly weren't ready to commit when questioned about it at E3.

                    Arstechnica Review

As a total package, Too Human is a good game. It's not a flawless title, or even an excellent one, but it's certainly a welcome addition to the Xbox 360 line-up. As a dungeon-crawler, it succeeds by combining a great breadth of collectible items with a welcome amount of character customization depth. As an action game, it succeeds by offering a strong combat engine with varied abilities, an addictive combo system, and a simple mix of magic, gun, and swordplay. And as an RPG, it succeeds in laying the groundwork for what will likely be a great trilogy of games that banks on an underused but no-less-interesting mythology.

Only overly high expectations will cause anyone walk out of Too Human disappointed. For a game that runs 13 hours cover to cover, there's a ton of replayability to be had, so in terms of sheer value, Too Human is certainly worth its price tag. Though the game was clearly made with multiplayer in mind, which may make the single player experience both a bit less interesting for some, the ability to play online with a friend, even if it's in random spurts, will likely be more than enough reason for hack-and-slash fans to sink upwards of 40 hours into this game.

Whether you're looking for a relatively deep action game, a solid co-op title, or another RPG to sink countless hours in to, Too Human fits the bill. And that makes the game a success, regardless of the hype, the controversy, and all the drama surrounding it.

                    The Good
                    • Source material is interesting and well-used
                    • Great depth in character customization
                    • Strong combat engine
                    • Sharp graphical presentation
                    • Drop-in, drop-out online co-op
                    • High replayability

                    The Bad
                    • Controls aren't for everyone
                    • No split-screen co-op
                    • Menu and camera need work
                    • Some distracting graphical bugs
                    • Cyberspace portion of game is too linear
                    • Difficulty balance is off as a result of A.I., death penalty

                    The Ugly
                    • Getting over the drama and just enjoying the game for what it is.

                    Verdict: Buy
